Hi Everyone,
I've been working with a #9GXE VL VLB card in my Dell 466v. It comes standard with 1MB VRAM configured in 8 - 256x4 60ns 28 pin modules soldered to the board. I then installed 8 more of the same compatible modules in the open slots on the card. I also upgraded the BT9485KPJ110 - 110 MHz RAMDAC to a BT485KPJ135 - 135 MHz. The bios is good. And I'm using the latest 4.15 driver. The two 40 pin sockets are open. I understand they can be populated with DRAM or VRAM, but that shouldn't affect what I am attempting to achieve here.
Here is the problem - When in DOS if I run GXEFILE.EXE it reports that there is only 1MB VRAM, but when I boot into Win95 the GXE software Hawkeye reports that there is indeed 2MB VRAM. Unfortunately, the resolution only allows 256 colors in 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768. The odd thing is that it will enable 640x480 in 16-bit color, but the color is all washed out in a yellowish tint.
I want to solve this issue so that true color can be enabled in higher resolutions with no fail, i.e. 1024x768x16.
Possibly the RAMDAC I installed is not a compatible one? If so, do any of you know which ones are compatible with the #9GXE VL?
Is it a possible software driver issue? Maybe this card won't work correctly in Win95 and I can only use Win 3.1?
Any other advice is welcome. I have worked a lot on this problem. I'm doing it to max out the Dell 466V while keeping the video card stock to what came with it. I like solving problems like these, but this one has me stumped.
Thank you for your support!
