I currently have 2x512mb DDR-333 working fine in this motherboard but would like to get at least 2x1GB working in dual channel mode.

I see the specs for this motherboard say it can support up to 4GB (of DDR aka DDR1) but may limit to 3GB max on windows 98. Okay, fine.

I also see a note in the motherboard manual that it cannot support 16 chip memory modules.

I am looking for 1GB chips that are not 16 chip. Do they exist? Same question for 2GB chips.

Note - I was able to get a single (16 chip) 1GB stick working, but when I add a second, the computer boot loops at the windows 98 startup screen.

You know when you put a system or motherboard into google search box and you get spammed with memory sales places... well some of the better ones, memory express, kingston, might actually tell you on the page more specs about what memory works, or you might be able to see the chips on the recommended module... then you can go hunting elsewhere, or say screw it, that price isn't too awful and get them there.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

To start with, see if you can find any by part no. from the Intel memory QVL - https://web.archive.org/web/20090226194039/ht … b/CS-027110.htm

Where are you reading this <about Win98 using 3GB> ? Win98 does not support 3GB natively, only 512/768MB or 1GB with fixes. Microsoft says 'theoretical' limit is 2GB for 16bit OS like Win98
As far as the 8 chip versus 16 chips: single bank/rank simms are typically 8 chip and 4 simms should work. If 16 chip (usually 8 on each side) than they take up 2 banks/ranks so only two simms will work.
The board (chipset) supports up to 4GB of single sided DIMMS but they must be 8 chip on one side only...

The note on page 7 notes the 3gb limitation.

I tried the suggestion to search web sites touring compatible ram and bought some supposedly suitable kingston 2x1gb ddr 400 chips. Same issues - reboot at windows 98 loading screen. I can get into doom.in dos but with no audio working, and other oddities.

Cannot read your link. Windows 98SE natively cannot run on more than 512Mb, for more it takes some system edits or file swaps to get it to run or else there are major issues....
Yes R.Loew fixed VMM32.vxd and VMM.vxd to run on a system with up to 4Gb. He is well known for his patches and fixes.....
However as he mentions in the "patchmem" there are other issues involved in running a 9x system with more than 512MB, some apps just will not behave plus other issues....

Good info, thank you.

So maybe the rebooting is a windows 98 issue and not being compatible with the volume of ram? Guess I'll have to dual boot xp and see how it behaves with 2gb. Win 98 has been running fine on the 2x512mb but I'm not using it for much other than games and have stripped out lots of unnecessary fluff.

Reference from the manual attached. It doesn't say anything about win 98 so I was making a connection in my head that doesn't exist.
