Until now I've used the one serial mouse on my 486, but it's got a break in the cable and sometimes will require a little TLC to bring back to life. I have tw0 ps/2 to serial adaptors, neither work with any of the mice I own. BUT my pal has an almost identical looking adapter, apart from the plastic housing being blue and it works fine with the mice I can't get to work with my own adapters. Taking a leap of logic, I decided it HAD to be my adapters so I bought a new one from ebay, a NOS Belkin. It arrived today and same as before, no dice.

Is there some mystical black magic one must perform to get an adaptor that works? I have 4-5 ps/2 mice and just the one serial. Surely there's a way to get these working on my older systems?

There's an old android saying which I believe is peculiarly appropriate here. In binary language it goes something like this: 001100111011000111100, which roughly translated means: "Don't stand around jabbering when you're in mortal danger!"

i dont know all the technical details but as i understand it those adapters only work with some mice. like the popular microsoft intellimouse comes in differrnt versions even if they visually look the same:

There is absolutely no standard in PS/2>Serial, so typically the converter that came with the mouse is the one that will work, and there’s no guarantee that another adapter will work.

I’ve got two identical looking (but different part number) Microsoft adapters. One works with my Intellimouse, one doesn’t. Neither work with any of my other serial compatible PS/2 mice.
