Greetings,

I am trying to conduct research on the latest BIOS for my motherboard, as I am limited to 32gb drives and cannot use 8gb+ slave with larger drives (two 8gb drives work fine.) When I boot up, I see 04/12/2000-vp3-596b-dd-2a5led4gc-00 on the bottom of the screen. I see BIOS for certain revisions which fix the slave issue and increase the supported drive size, but I want to get clarification before potentially bricking the board. I see info and BIOS here: What is the latest (beta) BIOS for K6XV3+/66 Rev. B+

Can I use the one from that thread and can I just copy awdflash and the bios to a drive and run it from DOS or do I need a floppy? It has been a while since I updated an old BIOS on an old machine.

Many thanks!

It is a k6xv3+/66 rev:B2. I thought I had asked about it some time ago, but I can't find a post asking about the BIOS.

Well I found a site with a beta bios along with other BIOS that matched the string of the one I have, so I flashed the BIOS but am still experiencing the same issues as before: my 32GB CF card with Windows 98 will only work by itself, and the BIOS doesn't detect sizes above 32GB. I have to open her up to see if I have space for a PCI IDE card as maybe that will solve these problems.

Thank you. I checked the page and did not see a patched BIOS for the K6XV3+/66. For now, I have flashed back to the original BIOS this motherboard came with because in addition to not fixing my drive issues, my sound cards and mouse stopped working in Windows 98SE with the beta BIOS.

I tried the beta bios again. I have two versions: one from 4/20 and the other from 4/18. With the other one, booting with the 128bg CF card causes the drives to perpetually access during the Windows 98 boot screen. Booting into MS-DOS allows me to recognize and format a 64GB CF card, but it cannot handle the 128GB card. I am able to boot into Windows with the 64GB as a slave to the 32GB Windows 98 OS card, but the system partially hangs when I open My Computer but eventually allows me to see the drives. However, I had to reformat it under Windows 98, and it will only see 32GB. So, unless I can get a fixed BIOS or get a PCI IDE controller card with large HD support in here (or multiple 32GB CF cards for slaves for all of the files I am trying to use on this PC,) it seems that under Windows 98 on the k6xv3+/66 rev:B2, I am limited to dual 32GB CF cards or dual 8gb cards. This is a real bummer. I have an Asus P2B p2 board that supports 120GB drives. So, the changelog stating that the beta BIOS allows support up to 137GB drives, is a lie, since 128GB isn't working at all, and 64GB is cut in half.

Hi Scythifuge,

Not counting the 04/18/2001 beta BIOS, your 04/12/2000-VP3-596B-DD-2A5LED4GC-00 BIOS is the latest official K6XV3+/66 release from DFI.

I know for sure that this BIOS fully supports IDE Drives up to 128GiB/137GB.
Before I published this BIOS on my K6plus webpage, I had several reports from K6XV3+/66 users that it worked fine with >32GB HDD drives, even with an 120GB SSD.
I also checked the BIOS code for the infamous Award BIOS 32GB and 64GB HDD limit bugs, there were none. 😀

I believe your capacity limit issues come from incompatibilities between modern CF (or SD) cards or interfaces, and these older 2000/2001 BIOSes which still conform to the ATA5 specification. Maybe you can find an 120GB SSD to solve the issue. 😉

Cheers, Jan
