Hi folks,

I have the above-mentioned ISA soundcard in my 486. It is a '4th gen' Aztech card using the AZT2320. It works well with Unisound with a bunch of DOS games I tested (Wolf3D, Doom, MSFS5.1, SC2000).

However I haven't had much luck getting it to work in Windows for Workgroups 3.11.

Here is what I have tried:

  • Configure PNP with Unisound and install Soundblaster 1.5 drivers for Windows. After installation, restarting Windows reboots the system.
  • Configure PNP with Unisound and install Windows Sound System 2.0. WSS installation craps out with some random protection error and leaves Windows in an unbootable state again.
  • Grabbed the AZTPNP.ZIP, P1633D-1.ZIP and P1633D-2.ZIP files from the Aztech ISA Drivers ZIP. AZTPNP installs fine and seems to work to set up PNP. (Unisound is a lot less hassle though.)
  • I didn't have any luck with the Windows drivers from the P1633D ZIP files (G Pro16III-3D PnP Version 2.00). They install okay but on restarting Windows the system reboots.

So I guess my question is, does anyone know of a working driver for this card for Windows 3.11. Or can I just configure it using Unisound then install a Soundblaster Pro driver or something?

Got this working in the end using the AZTPNP.ZIP stuff to configure the PnP and Soundblaster 2.0 Pro drivers for Windows 3.11.

It also works under Slackware 8.1 using the sb (Soundblaster) module.

I would like to get the proper Aztech SoundGalaxy drivers running just for the heck of it. In Linux 2.4.x there is a driver called 'sgalaxy' which looks like it ought to work, but I haven't had any success with it so far. The 'sb' driver works, but it is only 8 bit, whereas 'sgalaxy' ought to be 16 bit up to 44.1kHz I think. Not that it is that useful under Linux on the 486, which is too slow to play MP3s anyhow ...

Does anyone happen to know what exactly Unisound is doing when it switches the Aztech card from SBPRO <-> WSS mode? I need the same functionality in the Linux driver I think, so I can use WSS mode and have a 16 bit /dev/dsp (for Doom 🤣!)
