I've got a Win 98 build on an ASRock 4core-dual-sata-2 board with a C2D E7500 (2.9 GHz) and 4GB RAM, and another more period appropriate build on an ASRock P4I65G with a P4 3.4 Northwood and 512MB. On the more period appropriate build (P4), which currently uses DX7, I'm getting excellent results, for instance ~230-240 FPS in GLQuake and Q3A timedemos. However, on the C2D build, I'm getting much poorer results, 130 FPS in QLQuake and 95 FPS in Q3A. These results on the C2D build are only marginally better than the GF4 TI 4600 I was considering replacing. The only other difference between the installs on both computers is the C2D having DX8.1. I even downgraded it to 7.0 to see if it changed much, and the results decreased slightly in performance. I'm at a loss to understand how the 5950 is performing so poorly on the C2D build, which I don't think can be explained by the mere 500 MHz difference in CPUs, or any other factors I've considered thus far.

Make sure Fast Write/Side Band Adressing is working (+ AGP 8x mode).
Did you install GART (AGP) driver on VIA board ?
Also, make sure to disable "Flexibility Mode" for memory/RAM in VIA-based board.

ASRock 4core-dual-sata-2 has VIA PT880 Ultra chipset and unfortunately there is serious bug present here which affect proper AGP function and decrease performance. This bug only affects Windows 9x, XP (or 2000) should be fine.

Thank you for the replies, and especially the information regarding the VIA chipset bug. While I've had a lot of fun, sort of, with the 4core-dual-sata build, I think I'm going to repurpose it. I learned a tremendous amount from building around it and troubleshooting every... single... step along the way. It really made me understand how to put better components together for the P4 build, which has brought me nothing but pure Win 98 bliss.
