This is my modern frontend, designed to seamlessly support any modern PC or Mac while also accommodating older machines. Due to space constraints, I can’t keep peripherals from different eras, such as CRT monitors. I switch between machines depending on which era I feel like exploring, and I can comfortably do my work here as well, mostly using a MacBook.

Currently, the DX4 setup is connected under the desk.

This looks exceptionally nice. One of my favorite games as well. 😀

Which machine(s) do you use the most?

Do you mean from retro perspective? The dx4 and the p3 are my two favorites. They can cover the 90s.

Yes, exactly. From a retro perspective.

Finding the balance between speed and "retroness" is a delicate art.

I mostly concurr with your selection.

A fast 486 can cover anything up until the early '90s. Only fast DOS games are out.
You seem to really like the GUS card. I'm not familiar with it but I couldn't do without the OPL3 sound.

After the '90s everything is C2D+XP territory, which is not as fun.
I mean I have an Athlon XP and a P4 build, but they don't feel as retro to me, and the C2D is more convenient.

The gus is mostly for demoscene. It is interesting just at the hw mixing games, typically with module music - the pinballs.
These configs are the result of the lot of benchmarking and ca 20-30 builds, i tried out way more hardware.

You can find here the benchmark tables (check the tabs below):
