Good morning! I hope I'm posting correctly, I apologize if not. I've visited the forum many times but it's my first post. I recently purchased a 486 gateway 2000 handbook and am refurbishing it. I just repaired the backlight and am interested in upgrading the ram. Would anyone happen to know where I can purchase the 16mb upgrade or if there are any compatible models out there. I'm a novice at this so I appreciate any helpful information I can get. Thanks !

I believe it uses the normal 30-pin SIMM modules.

Great! Thanks. I'll give it a try. I just finished repairing the backlight. I'll be swapping in a cf card with Windows 95 next for the hard drive. It currently has 3.11 on it. I'd like to try Linux after the upgrade. I've never worked with it but am interested in learning just like I am with DOS.

Looks more like an SO-DIMM... https://web.archive.org/web/20041214205843/ht … /00000103.shtml

That seems like the correct one, though one of the resource pages below refers to using EDO rather than FPM for the upgrade, so maybe this part instead (not my listing)... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333150147586

If you haven't already found them, here a few good resouces links for the HANDBOOK 486, incuding manuals & BIOS updates etc...

https://classicbits.net/vintage-computing/gat … 0/handbook-486/

https://web.archive.org/web/20110723103526/ht … jects/handbook/

https://jeff.mulb.us/articles/gwhb/gwhb.php

This link from the Gateway archive lists what download files used to be available... https://web.archive.org/web/20030117192434/ht … n=SYSHBK002AAWW and although these file links are dead, most still can be found elsewhere.

Lastly, the ram upgrade process mentions running the RAMINST.COM app whilst slotting in the additional ram...the app (in compressed form) is attached below.

Thank you for these resources! I'll be doing some research. The ram on the eBay link is the 16mb? I didn't see it on the description.

Yes 16MB - the 432 (or 4 Meg x 32) in the part no. indicates as such - see the attached datasheet

Perfect! Do you recommend a version of Linux for beginners?

So, my ram upgrade comes in today. I was looking at installing windows 95. I am using a 1gb cf card I had laying around. I tried using an iso i found on archive but had no success. I setup the card with Rufus with a freedos setup and MBR, then dropped the iso file on the card after using 7z to extract. The error I'm getting is the system software was not found on the hard disk, please run bios xxx to restore. I've only found one guy online that has 95 on his but the post is 11yrs old. What might I be missing? Does the card brand make a difference? I used the same method on my libretto and I started right up with Windows 98 setup. Thanks again for all the help everyone.
