Where did you get the Rage XL ? Some of the newly made ones (from old stock chips), while keyed in a way that will fit a 5V only PCI slot (like in the P2B), will only work in a 3.3V PCI slot unless they are modified with an addition voltage regulator. There is a thread about this somewhere on Vogons.
Interesting. I got mine from eBay last year. So it must be a new stock. The card does work on 2 newer boards I tested (M6VLR and K8m800). Edit : The M6VLR has 5 V PCI slots. It still worked there. That is how I was able to see my bootblock. Now it is getting a little confusing.
It sounds like different things might be getting mixed up here. Normally "5V PCI slot" refers to the signal voltage, not power, but those are separate issues.
No doubt the M6VLR slots use 5V *signaling* (virtually all desktop motherboards do), but that doesn't mean they don't provide 3.3V power. PCI slots have pins for 3.3V, 5V, and 12V power. However, many older boards don't deliver 3.3V power - it didn't become a mandatory feature until a later version of the PCI spec.
Newer cards, even though they work with 5V signaling (and are keyed as such), may require the 3.3V power supply pins to be functional. The modern reproduction/knockoff RageXL cards are an example - they omit the onboard 3.3V regulator that cards from the period would have included, instead drawing directly from the 3.3V supply through the PCI pins. Those pins are not connected on some older boards. Not sure if that applies to the P2B, but it may depend on the revision.
