I've finally managed to replace the original fans on my 5500 with Noctua replacements, and it is now quiet enough to spend some time tinkering with!
(Incidentally I managed to do the fan swap with no soldering, and no crimping, which I was very happy with. PiHut (UK) sells a JST plug which fits the socket on the Voodoo, but which terminates in male pins - these can plug straight into the Noctua fan plug, so completely reversible.)
The one I got is the Mac model with the DVI port. I am using it on PC, and have flashed it with the PC version BIOS. All is working fine. Normal 3DFX drivers installed from driver CD. Windows 98 works fine, and the card is flawless in 3dMark2000/Quake 3.
I'd just been using the VGA port, and it was fine. I wanted to try tinkering with the DVI output. I popped a DVI to HDMI in the DVI port, and fired it up. Works fine in the BIOS screen, through POST and to the Windows loading screen. Nice and crisp, at least to my eye. This is all at the 700x400/70hz mode (I am running through an extron).
The only problem is when the system tries to initial graphical windows. It just BSODs every time.
My guess is that the PC drivers don't know anything about DVI output, so the system just cannot handle it, and gives up. I just get a blank screen if I boot with VGA and then try to switch to DVI after windows boots.
I tried to search the forum for this issue, but drew a blank. Has anyone managed to get DVI output working in Windows? Hacked drivers, or something like that?
Cheers in advance,
