Flashed a new BIOS chip for my 2133 PS/1 today using the "TOM 1.0" BIOS. Started running benchmarks, everything went fine, ran SpeedSys, it ran, but hung when it got to the hard drive portion (hard locked the computer). Ran it again, it froze on detecting the hard drive.

Tried the other benchmarks, ran Doom at high graphics, Quake...etc, everything ran fine. Booted Windows 95 back up, installed Plus!, Windows went to restart, hard drive started making some very odd noises and Windows never restarted. Manually restarted, computer was fine.

Fired up SpeedSys again, crashed at the hard drive detection again, but this time with a new error, green text: 00000 (S)

Am tempted to swap back the original BIOS chip to see if that solves the problem (and I'll loose my L1 cache temporarily), which would narrow it down to the BIOS, however, the program ran fine the first time until it got to the hard drive?

Thoughts?

I've had a similar issue with XT-IDE. I wondered if the benchmark has a switch to skip hard drive detection.

Was wondering the same!

Update: swapped back the original BIOS, no difference. So I went ahead and did the FSB mod and now it's running at 100Mhz.

I am experiencing the same issue, speedsys freezes on ATAPI detection.

I'd say it's nothing wrong with the machine. The tool itself has an issue, as it freezes on several machines I have that are otherwise fully working.
It might help to try and run it from an empty CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT boot in certain cases.

I find it weird that it worked fine previously with the onboard CPU and then froze the first time I ran it with the ODP installed (stock FSB speed still) and then would no longer get past the detection point after that first freeze. I tried copying a fresh copy over, same behaviour. Also had HWInfo freeze in Windows when it got to the same spot (hard drive detection), but the DOS version runs fine and the system is 100% stable gaming and stuff.

Edit:
May be pertinent: the drive does NOT work with a USB IDE adapter. I managed to get it to detect ONCE, and it froze reading the drive contents and then I could never get it to detect again, so I'm wondering if the drive's just a bit sketchy?
