Starting on February 26th, 2025, Amazon is removing a feature from its website allowing you to download purchased books to a computer and then copy them manually to a Kindle over USB. It’s a feature that a lot of Kindle users are probably not aware of, given books can be more easily sent to devices over Wi-Fi, but it’s especially useful for backing up purchases or converting them to other formats compatible with non-Kindle e-readers.

This is what I did to back up MY books

1. Create a collection of YOUR books so you can bulk download them.

2. Download and install v2.4.70904 of Kindle for PC
*Versions newer than v2.4.70904 prevent DeDRM from working with KFX books

3. Open Kindle for PC and login

4. Right-click ONLY one collection you created and choose download.

5. Kindle for PC saves YOUR books here: C:\Users\username\Documents\My Kindle Content
but does not use your collection name.

6. Close Kindle for PC. Go to C:\Users\username\Documents\My Kindle Content
Create a directory with your collection name and move the downloaded books to it.

7. Re-open Kindle for PC and perform steps 4-6 until all collections are done.

8. Download and install Calibre
https://calibre-ebook.com/download

9.

Download DeDRM and unzip it. Make note of the unzip location
v10.0.9 (RC1 for 10.1.0) asof 2-23-2025
https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools/releases/

Download KFX Plugin from the first post
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=291290

10. Open Calibre
for setup I chose default path and Kindle Basic
Setup Kindle email if you want or skip it

11. Click on Preferences -> Change Calibre behavior

12. Click "Advanced" and then "Load plugin from file"

13. Go to the unzipped DeDRM directory and click on "DeDRM_plugin.zip" and then click "Restart Calibre"

14. Repeat steps 10-13 for the KFX plugin, just point directly to the downloaded KFX zip

15. In Calibre go to "Add Books" ->Add books from folders and subfolders.

16. In Calibre go to one of the Collection directories that you created and click "OK" to import.

17. Once that one Collection is imported then highlight all booksand then click on "Convert books" -> "Bulk Convert"

18. Go here for converted books: C:\Users\username\Calibre Library

19. Repeat steps 15-17 for the rest of the collections. I prefer not having to rely on a program so after each collection was done I move the files out of "Calibre Library" and wiped the books from Calibre.

Never use Amazon to buy books ever again. The items you buy online are yours no matter what a T.O.S states, this has been proven in court. No you cannot do whatever you want with it but you should be able to use what you own. All these sites stating that these actions taken by sites prove that you don't own what you buy are maliciously ignorant, you do and this is backed up by law. Check the respective law and precedent from whichever country you are in, NOT the T.O.S from an online store.
