Hello everyone,

I'm new here. I've already read quite a few posts — everything is really informative here. 😀

Now I have a question myself. I bought a Compaq Presario CDS 520.
According to the seller, the thing was working perfectly.

But when I unpacked it and turned it on at my place, the screen had a strong yellow tint.
I opened the PC and adjusted the RGB potentiometers at the back until the picture looked normal again.

Closed the PC, put it on the desk, turned it on — and the screen was yellow again. Same procedure again… opened it, adjusted the pots until the picture looked fine.

Then I turned it off. Today, when I turned it on again, the picture was yellow… but after about 30 seconds, the colors normalized by themselves.

To the right of the CRT, there are also potentiometers for adjusting width, height, etc.

And whether I'm adjusting the RGB pots or the ones for screen size and shape — sometimes everything flickers just from touching a pot with the screwdriver. It almost seems like there's a loose contact somewhere.
Does anyone have an idea where I could take a look?

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks a lot!

You'll have to take the boards out and fix any bad solder joints. Potentiometers can also go bad over time by wiper delamination or getting dust/oxidation inside.

If you have a color shift and it normalizes after a short time period, check the convergence circuit components. I'd replace capacitors first and see if the problem goes away. If not, it is something else in that circuit that is only exhibiting proper function once it warms up -- and that will also require component replacement.
