I built a PC-SPRINT and put it in my IBM 5160.
https://github.com/reeshub/pc-sprint
What I had on hand was an 8284A and 8088-2, which are both rated for up to 8 MHz.
I also bought a whole bunch of crystals of various frequencies to see how far I could push it without breaking something.
Here are my notes:
7.16 MHz - works
7.37 MHz - works
7.53 MHz - works
8.19 MHz - works, can't read floppy
8.68 MHz - POSTs, won't boot
9.00 MHz - won't POST
9.48 MHz - won't POST
10.00 MHz - won't POST
Unsurprising results. However, I wondered how much this was due to instability in the 8284A and the CPU itself.
So I got a hold of an 8284A-1 and an 8088-1, both rated for 10 MHz operation. Stay tuned for my results with these parts.
