I'd replied to another post on this topic but this is my first real post...

I tried every combo of drivers and directx versions for both 95 and 98 and didn't make any real progress troubleshooting my Monster Sound Gold board, so I'm looking for some advice on testing the daughterboard on an ESS Audiodrive ISA card I have. My question is what to look for in Windows when I plug in the daughterboard to the ESS card so that I know it's working. I couldn't even get the joystick port on the Monster Sound card to register a joystick and from what I read the connection for joystick and midi/wavetable are electrically the same. I have no other working sound cards with a wavetable header but the ESS card works fine, so it's my only choice in troubleshooting. This is all my old hardware from back in the day but I haven't touched any of it in the last few decades and I'm a bit rusty. Thanks in advance.

Did you check the volume control on the ESS? ESS has a seperate slider for wavetables. Called AUXB perhaps. Also MPU must be enabled, check the driver settings.

I was just able to get back to check this today... I verified that the volume on Auxb was set to 8 (same as the others) and through esscfg.exe that the MPU was enabled. I just tried changing the settings for the MPU with the same result. To test in DOS I loaded up dosmid.exe /mpu and it'll show that it's playing a .mid file but I only hear some clicks and a bit of noise. I get the same in Win98 when I try to play something through the MPU as well. I don't have another daughterboard or soundcard with a wavetable header to test with so I'm stuck thinking that maybe the board is bad. Thanks for the help anyway.

Hearing clicks when playing a MIDI isn't promising... Is this the full sized Monster MIDI board?

Yeah, that's what I figured. And it is this one:

It's a SAM9733 I think. Any components looking bad? I assume you have it installed in the correct orientation?

You're right, it's the SAM9733. I can't see any damage on the daughterboard or sound card. I've had it bagged since the late 90s and hadn't messed with it since and I can't remember having any problems back in the day (doesn't mean there wasn't a problem, I just can't remember). As far as orientation... I only took the board off recently, so unless it came from the factory installed wrong I believe it's correct.
