I want to order a book that's about $20 from the UK (including shipping), but I have no idea what the import duty is and whether it's worth it. Has anyone made any small value purchases like this and can provide some information?

I still order from AliExpress, and that seems to be okay, and I've never had to pay any large fee on top of anything at checkout.

It used to be that items under $800 were duty free, but that no longer seems to be the case. I just hate that it's a mystery.

At least for GR post office there is no updates of when it will be possible to ship things to the US again or how much of an extra cost this will be... Got a bunch of packages waiting here with no sending date in sight yet 😒

There are no longer any de minimis exemptions. Not $800, not $200, not $20. And the duty charge will differ per country. For some countries it is the same as whatever the negotiated tariff was. For countries without a negotiated tariff, it could be 100% the cost of the item. In other cases, there might be an $80 blanket charge, so that $20 purchase could be $100. Basically, it's all a mess, which is why several delivery services have temporarily halted shipments to the U.S. until they figure it out. I would recommend waiting, unless the seller includes duty charges in the purchase price, so you know how much you will actually be paying.
