The game, on being launched with carma2.exe, either plays no sound in CARMA2 HW mode or just crashes on CARMA2 SW mode. Upon little research on the HW executable, it seems to be getting a DirectSoundCreate: ERROR res=0x88780078(DSERR_NODRIVER). I have little idea what it could mean, does anyone have any leads?

The solution involves using the main EXEs. This is well known. I am finding something that fixes the issue from carma2.exe

there is also a patch 1.2 for the retail game, have you tried that? patches like this can fix problems.
