Computer is not functional.
System: Magenti CPU01 (custom DOS/9x/2k/XP build)
Motherboard: ASUS P5B v1.04
CPU: Intel Xeon X5460 3.16GHz
GPU: nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX 512 (P348)
OS: Windows Me (also applies to 98 Second Edition)

Issue: Video drivers do not work properly, blinking cursor on boot after Windows Me splash screen. Sometimes will boot but only with 640x480 at 16 colors with a prompt saying the driver that displays content is not working. (Likely NVDISP?)

Driver: Tweaked MDGx nVidia 82.69 driver for GeForce 6 and 7 series (claims to even work on 8/9 series but does not) Also tested on another driver, patched 77.72 drivers from windows98.xf.cz

What have I tried: PTCHNVSZ, FIXINTR, FIXINTRB, FIXEOI, reinstalling drivers, etc. also tested with a GeForce 7900 GS which is also known to work, same issue.

Fix: Unknown. I also have not tried BFG's 7800 GS drivers and I have not tried another motherboard, but I don't think that will fix the issue I am having.

Has anyone encountered this issue and were they able to fix it?

Does the card work ok under 2k and XP? 512mb cards can give issue with stock Windows 9x. Rudolph R. Loew did a patch that can work for some systems.

Yes, the card works under 2k and XP. Also I have tried the patch but it does not seem to work for me.

Alright, I think I tracked down the culprit. I think it may be PATCHMEM or something but I could be wrong. When I set maxphyspage to 20000 the video card works, sorta. I'm able to set resolutions as high as 1600x1200 at 16 bit color but any higher and the machine will lock up. When I limit the amount of RAM to 1GB by setting maxphyspage to 40000, the system immediately displays a bunch of red lines like it does when I set the resolution higher. The same thing happens with a GeForce 6600 GT, an officially supported video card.

So you patched the Nvcore.vxd? How much ram? I have issues with more than 2gb so I never exceed that amount.

I did patch nvcore. I have 2GB of memory via PATCHMEM /M. When I limit it to 512MB it mostly works fine.

Maybe try 1gb stick with patchmem. Is this a fresh install? I've built a similar setup with a P5B deluxe and a Quadro FX 3450 for a friend so I'm sure it's possible. It seems like when you get one Currie card to work you can get them all except for the Quadro FX 5500 1gb, I never got that to work.

The computer seems to run if I set maxphyspage to 15000... but that's *far* from ideal for my 9x system. I'm sure there has to be a way to fix this issue with how much memory is allocated to nVidia drivers, or with PatchMEM... idk. I tried Glover on it just for the heck of it and it ran although it does stutter a bit, likely due to the frame cap and how fast this computer is.

Maybe it's a bios setting or something. 6600GT and 7900gs should definitely work. The 7800GTX 512 is a rare card that I've never seen or tried, does nvsize report is as the full 512MB?

Hope you figure it out.

make sure you have lonecrusaders chipset drivers installed if you havent done already, just copy the machine.inf files across to 98 overwriting the originals.

the problem you're having is normal, with some fiddling you should be able to get it working, as the driver doesnt recognise the 7 series cards the instal will fail if you run with the .exe, i plug in a pcie 6200 run the setup with that then when the system reboots, i power off and switch the 6200 for my 7950gt 512mb, it then detects the card and installs it.
also for some reason my 6200 doesnt install properly on 98 might be as the card is a turbocache model.

anyway last time i did this it didnt work and i was having the same problems as you, what i did was try the other 82.69 driver (the one that doesnt say tweaked) i never use this driver as i was convinced it was broken, so only used the tweaked one.

first i made sure i had the both the drivers .exe's extracted to folders, i plugged in my 6200 and ran the setup for the non-tweaked driver, on reboot i switched the card for my 7950gt, it still didnt install correctly so i went through device manager and directed it to the folder with the tweaked driver, this got it working along with the nvidia contol panel as the icon then appeared in the tray.

also the only reason to use rloews nvidia patch is to boot to dos, i use a 7950gt 512mb and havent had any issues so far.

Tried the lonecrusader chipset drivers and that didn't work... I will try a different m0therboard and get back to you all later. I'm thinking this could be an issue with how my Asus P5B works, idk.

I have ordered a Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G motherboard which is known to support 9x with ACPI (i think) and I will test that next. Has anyone had any experience with this motherboard and windows 9x?

Alright, I got the video drivers working with the 77.72 drivers modded to run the 7800 GTX 512. However, the DVD drives and ZIP drive don't want to work anymore. I think i will need to install a secondary IDE card to get those working.
