Probably will give this a try soon. Interesting article but there was one statement that I just wished gamedevs would reconsider:

That style of “use verb on noun” gameplay is now comparable to a black-and-white silent movie, he said, and will feel similarly  dated to everything but a niche of aging, nostalgic players

I just dont get it. It like saying we dont need to print any more books after Shakespeare published his first few works

I always thought this point and click format is its own thing meant to stay. The quiet contemplative nature is certainly the antithesis to death by scrolling

Think he's just stating facts.
Many game genres are no longer mainstream. I'm more into RTS's but have admitted the days of a AAA title are gone, anything new will be more of a independent title
(This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as AAA titles seem more focused on paid content these days)

Also text driven adventure games would be a hard sell. Knowing which exact command are needed.
Point and click still have a place though and plenty are still made by indy developers but doubt a big publisher will make one again.

Yes – there is a chance that I simply don’t accept some realities.

I just don’t know why game devs always seem to think they have to revolutionize the whole industry with every new release. This is contrary to aforementioned books (paper and pen will do) and while black and white movies are mostly gone, B&W photography is still a thing.

To me the point and click genre is more about the content than the need to “improve the engine” Meaning I would happily play another 5 games made in the Thimbleweed engine (or any other similar engine) as long as there is an intriguing, fascinating, exciting romantic or funny story to tell (I suspect that this may be actually the hardest part)

Regarding the RTS genre - I also think that formula has “peaked” long ago. In contrast to narrative games, I don’t even feel much of a need for a new title. Just a map of AOE II on a local network is as good as RTS ever got for me and I also don’t see much need to improve the gameplay. I even frequently go back to the oldest entries to the genre like Settlers (Serf City) or Warcraft and have a ton of fun.
