Hello everyone,
I've been looking at upgrading the 386DX CPU inside my T5200 to a 486. I've done some research and found some potential upgrades. Besides the possibility of paying over $200 for some of the CPU upgrades, I found a TX486DLC/E-40GA at a decent price. According to some information I have found, some of the CPUs will run at 20MHz when installed into the T5200 but some will run at 40 MHz due to built-in clock doubling. I have no idea if this CPU has clock doubling built in. If it does not, I'd rather find out now then after I buy it.

I found some specs on this webpage but it doesn't give me much info otherwise.

For this interested, this CPU is listed on SpitFire-666's Github as an upgrade as well as others.

Thanks

Can you upgrade the motherboard's clock crystal to 80MHz?

It does not have clock doubling. For clock doubling you should find CPU’s like Cyrix Cx486DRx2 or Texas Instruments TI486SXL2 😀.

I've done some more research and found the TI TX486SXLB-040-GA is a pretty good upgrade. It features clock doubling and is one of the better upgrade paths. The Cyrix processor you mentioned was the first one I looked at but the only one I found for sale was in Toyko Japan for over $190.

I haven't looked into that. I'm not good with soldering so I don't think this is a path I could go down.
