Hello everyone,
I have been investigating an issue with Shuttle: The Space Flight Simulator (Virgin Games / Vektor Grafix, 1992) for several weeks, and I'm looking for someone who has actually completed the DOS campaign.
Here is what I have tested so far.
DOS Versions
• European version
• US version
Hardware / Emulation
• DOSBox-X
• Real PC running MS-DOS 7.0
The results are always consistent.
European version
After completing the military satellite mission (Mission 10), selecting the next mission simply reloads the previous one. The campaign never progresses.
US version
Mission 10 appears to complete successfully, but the next mission remains locked (greyed out). Although the debriefing reports a successful mission, the campaign is not updated.
Because of this, I started comparing the game on other platforms.
Amiga version
I tested the WHDLoad version and also began investigating original disk images. I encountered another progression problem later in the campaign during the Hubble repair mission: it is impossible to attach the repair module to the telescope, although this may be unrelated.
Atari ST version
Tested with Steem using both my own KryoFlux dump of the original disks and STX images. On Mission 2, the launch countdown sequence never starts. The shuttle remains on the launch pad indefinitely.
At this point, I'm trying to determine whether:
• there is a genuine campaign bug;
• there is a copy protection mechanism that has not been fully understood;
• or there is some undocumented behaviour specific to certain versions or ports.
My questions are:
Has anyone here completed the DOS version from beginning to end?
Does anyone still own the original DOS floppy release and can test Mission 10?
Has anyone identified any copy protection or campaign validation checks?
I'm interested in any information, including old magazine reviews, patches, technical documentation, or personal experience.
Thank you!
