For a long time now, I've had Tomb Raider set up on my system using an unofficial build of DOSBox, Daum SVN 1/27/14. There are a couple newer versions, but I had some issues with them, although I can't remember exactly what they were. I think maybe FMVs stuttered. I have it configured with NGlide 2.10, and options to run both the game and the Unfinished Business add-on in either 3DFX or software mode. I also have both versions patched to play the extra audio from the Playstation version. I've played through the game with this setup a few times and never experienced any issues.

I recently decided to try a newer version of DOSBox. I picked DOSBox-X because I have an OLD system, running an OLD version of Windows, and DOSBox-X happens to have a version that will run on it.

So I dropped the EXEs and config file into a copy of my Tomb Raider installation, edited the config file to set it to fullscreen, and enable Glide support, then pasted in my commands to mount the CD image and launch the game. From there, virtually nothing works correctly.

If I use the SDL1 version, then the game goes back to a window every time an FMV plays. If I use SDL2, it stays in fullscreen, but...

With both of them, sometimes the fullscreen display doesn't have focus because I can see the Windows task bar at the bottom of the screen. A much bigger problem though, is that when I run the 3DFX version and go to Lara's mansion, it runs all the speech together, and even keeps playing when I access the menu. Another problem is that if I press ESC to abort an FMV, it seems to register twice. Pressing it on the Core Design logo also aborts the intro FMV no matter how quickly I press it, and pressing it on the mansion FMV will cause the menu to pop up as soon as the game screen comes on. And there's about a 50% chance that it will crash when I exit the game, requiring me to click a button to kill it.

I was hoping to use a newer DOSBox to more or less future-proof my DOS games, but as it stands now, the 12 year old DAUM version seems to work much better than DOSBox-X.
