I read the postings about how to increase game speed, but didn't see the following addressed

I'm playing SSI's Age of Rifles and find that increasing the cycles to 30,000 is about right for making the movies and gameplay smoother. However, I know it can be dangerous to set it too high and naturally I don't want to damage my system to play a 10-year-old game. How can I tell what's too high? I have a P4 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM, NVIDIA128MB graphics card, SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit.

Thanks, and apologies always if this was addressed elsewhere.

This is an absolute nonsense. You misunderstood it. If you set cycles too high, it will slow down (your computer can handle inly certain amount of cycles). There is not any danger there.
IT WILL NOT DAMAGE YOUR COMPUTER.

Closing.
