Which operating systems were you able to install within DOSBox?
Which operating systems were you able to install within DOSBox?
Windows 3.1. Windows 3.11, Dos 6.22, Windows 95a (only with CVS)
RUNS BUT CANNOT INSTALL
Windows 95b (CVS)
Windows 95c (CVS)
I think Windows 3.0 works as well but I haven't tried it in awhile.
I also tried a Linux floppy image awhile back but that didn't work.
OS/2 versions below v4 don't work. (Don't have v4 so can't test that)
I know. You tried ELKS. I think DOSBox (speaking with no technical knowledge) screws up cos it checks for a valid bootsector.
Is Windows 95a the one called OSR1?
Which CVS did you use to install Windows 95?
Windows 95a is just the very first release. No Service Pack or something like that installed. DosFreak explained in another thread that he installed the other Windows 95 with another emulator (Bochs? I forgot) and runs them on CVS. When *I* say CVS, I mean plain vanilla CVS, no special patches integrated.
Bootsector is not a problem since you need to use a had image for real operating systems anyway (Windows 3.x and earlier just sit on top of plain Dos - even 95 needs special things).
I was referring to linux within DOSBox while I was talking about bootsector.
I know there was a thread for having Windows 95 working within DOSBox, I just can't find it!
Thanks for the info anyway.
That stuff needs port-level access to the drives. You're better off
using Bochs/qemu/whatever for that.
I know but linux is supposed to work with those emulators so it's no fun.
Recently I shook dust from MESS, that I had put aside for a while and I noticed they made great progresses with IBM PC's and similar's disks controllers. ELKS seems to work with any MESS emulated PC that has a (-n emulated) video card, if you wanna try that. But that's another story.
Don't know why people want to run OSs on dosbox if it's just to see
whether it works or not. There's a lot more work behind it, and it's
not too extraordinarily satisfying if it only serves a "works, but is useless".
If you're on an x86 system, the dynamic core might give better results in the CVS.
Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. Now that my favourite game was brought back to life I just find cool testing such things for myself.
