Using dosbox 0.7 on Windows XP with an old database application (a DBase application) I get a DOS-ERROR 4 (i.e. too many open files) on startup, when the database tries to create the index files. However, I cannot find an option to raise the number of FILES as it was possible in the golden age of DOS, i.e. in the CONFIG.SYS.

I even raised the number of FILES in the CONFIG.NT file of Windows XP's dosbox, but I think this is not related to "our" dosbox.

What went wrong?

Thanks for help

Heiko

You can create a dummy config.sys file in the directory you mount as your virtual c-harddrive. Including a line like files=99 should be enough.

By the way: Playing around with your windows xp config files has no influence on dosbox.

No,

did not work. As I understand it, all configurations go into the dosbox.conf file. However, there is not FILES-option mentioned in the doc.

Anyone got an idea? Maybe this old database simply has another problem with dos box...

Surely (dosbox provides enough files) but we can only guess. Try some stuff
like loadfix, if you really need to get it working install some dos inside dosbox
and see if it works there.
