Nine Lives CD Extra won't work in XP or DOSBox

When running in Windows XP it states: requires DOS version 6.2 or better. So, I contacted Sony and they told me that due to XP not having a true "DOS" that it wouldn't run. So I downloaded DOSBox, set it up according to the readme file. I set my CDROM drive to E and made the folder in My Documents, etc. However, now when I select the E:\ drive in DOSBox and type "setup" it has a message that says: This program requires Microsoft Windows.

I'm currently using a Sony VAIO, Windows XP Home, SP2, the processor, graphics, sound, everything is compatible. The CD is the Aerosmith Nine Lives CD that has a "CD EXTRA" on it. It's supposed to play music, and a few videos I think. But the most important thing I miss is the interactive game where you can pick the instrument to play along on the song with by tapping a key on the keyboard. That didn't make much sense but anyway... my old desktop used to play the game and I'm not sure now what to do to get it to work!?

1) It probably wont make any difference, but try to use the letter D in DOSBox for the CD-ROM.

2) Is there something else on the CD beside SETUP? Something like INSTALL?

There is no change when I use D:\ and there are no other files other than \setup and \autorun which both do the same thing.

This program requires Microsoft Windows.

Means exactly what it say's. Your trying to run a Windows program in DosBox which does not work because DosBox only runs DOS programs.

Since it require DOS (for some dumb reason) and Windows, it probably only works in Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME.

I see... so there's no fix for programs that need Windows and DOS to run... for Windows XP, huh!?

When running, or when installing it using SETUP ?

when I put it in, the autorun shows a box that states "install" or "visit webpage" (which is outdated), and "exit". When I click "install" it begins to install it, but stops when that error pops up about the DOS version 6.2.

if you have a old copy of windows around you could try virtual pc...

or look through the CD for the program that the autorun.exe file launches.

That's what she's got I think and it was released in '97.

Sarah, I would recommend you get Virtual PC from the web, it's free from Microsoft. Then find a Windows 95 CD and install that into a Virtual PC session like so - http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/ … /15/372846.aspx

Then the CD should work as expected, aside from the dead web link.

😀

Do I have to purchase an old Windows 95 CD or is there a place on the web I can get it for free?

well, nevermind. Just went to download Virtual PC and it turns out my Windows XP Home isn't supported. Bummer :disapproving:

Depending on your computer knowledge, there's a number of other "PC Emulators" (that term is not 100% correct) you could use.

For example:
VMWare (relatively easy to setup)
QEmu (no GUI, thus hard to setup for beginners)
BOCHS (quite slow, also no built-in GUI)

There are more.

For all of these programs, you will need a Win95/98/ME CD to install from. None of these Windows versions is available for free, they are all still copyrighted by Microsoft.

What you would do is to basically install a complete Windows 95/98/ME system in one of these virtual machines, and then run the CD Extra content in that virtual machine. Not exactly a trivial thing to do, and you'll need quite a fast machine, and a lot of RAM.

Sarah, it would help if you could post the following information:

  1. The contents of the AUTORUN.INF file on the CD. It should be a simple text file with 3-4 lines in it. Open it in Notepad, and post the contents here.
  2. Open a CMD.EXE window (Start => Run... => CMD.EXE). At the CMD-prompt, issue the command
    DIR /S /B E:
and post the file listing here.

When I click on the "autorun" icon, notepad opens up and it says this:

[autorun]
open = spoot.exe

When I do the command prompt thing and type DIR /S /BE:

it says:
Parameter format not correct - "BE:".

WOW... ok, that worked. But, it won't let me copy and paste on here, how do I do that? And it looks like there were MANY more files listed than I can see. I tried scrolling up, but it won't do that. How can I see the entire list?

I typed what you said... maybe it worked? Where is the file list.txt? I looked in the CD drive files on the CD and it's not there?
