For a long time, Maniac Mansion, low resolution version, seemed to refuse to work in Tandy mode. I had assumed this was because of some bug in DOSBox's implementation of it. However, DOSBox also recently implemented EGA support, and Maniac Mansion looked screwy there too. However, I was aware that I was using a version of Maniac Mansion taken from a Day of the Tentacle CD. I wanted to try a true floppy disk version to make sure. It took me a long time to track one down, but when I finally did, I discovered that the old floppy version apparently works perfectly in Tandy and EGA modes in DOSBox. This version is slightly different in that the mouse is not enabled by default and the quit command is probably Ctrl-Q*, not Alt-X. This would keep it in line with the other versions of Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken released during the time period.
Apparently LucasArts modified the executable to keep these modes from working when it included the game with Day of the Tentacle. Obviously it had no need to ensure that the game continued to work with EGA or Tandy when the main game did not support any of those display adapters. This makes further sense when you consider that LucasArts did disable EGA and Easy Mode support when it re-released Monkey Island 2 in the executable.
* Ctrl-Q does not work to quit in any Maniac Mansion or Zak McKracken game. Does this have to do with DOSBox's hot keys and can it be fixed?
