Just built another old school gaming PC from an Intel AN430TX socket motherboard with a 100mhz Pentium I
What suprised me is that it had some Soundblaster compatible sound circuits called Yamaha OPL3-SA 3D and some Midi wavetable circuits called OPL4-ML
Never thought I'd find a mobo with all this yummy stuff on

Just tested Descent with the above setup, the General Midi soundtrack almost sounded as good as on my DB60XG, just a couple of notes that were a bit low

Seems like the card is SB Pro compatible, only option that gives sound when I try it

Hi Amigaz!

Sounds interesting! What's the full name of the board? Perhaps you can post a picture? Do you know the exact chip number? Could it be one of the YMF7xxx-Series, which was used in some (early) (micro)ATX-Boards (i.e. Gigabyte GA-6EMMP)? - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_YMF7xx
OPL4 has the number YMF278B or so, OPL3 YMF262.

Did you test it in pure DOS or out of Win98? Do you have to load drivers to use it in DOS? There were even some onboard solutions, that could be configured using the BIOS...

I'm going to have a closer look at the mobo + take some pic's 😀

The sound works in pure DOS (win 95 OSR2) also the MIDI when set to GM, IRQ 5, port 330 etc
This is just too good to be true, gonna add some MT32 hardware to this baby then it's a very capable machine imho

Here's the manual, which should provide some info, including a rough layout:

PS: come to think of it, I'm actually the proud owner of the exact same board (!)

Never even occurred to me what this was before reading your post... 😊
(But please don't ask me to do any testing)

Here's a pic of the entire mobo, just removed the Orchid Voodoo 1 which seem to ancient to play Quake 2 with, 🤣
Replaced it with a nice 12mb Diamond Monster Voodoo 2

Here's a picture showing the Yamaha chips, my RTL 8139 nic is in the way 😵

Thanks

Had to resort to intels website yesterday to find the Yamaha sound drivers and the chipset install files now Win95 OSR2 runs happily except it didn't install my USB ports which I have no clue how to get them workking since Intel didn't have them in the downloads for my mobo 😕

Haven't ever tried USB myself on this one, but here's some info I found:

Ctrl+F: 'usb' ...

PS: how'bout thumbnailing those 'tiny' pics of yours...? 😁

So, it has integrated OPL4 wavetable synthesizer, my YAMAHA Sound-Edge has the same.... YAMAHA used to make those combo chips (1xopl3/sb + opl4) for cheap cards/onboard audio... and they work really well!
OPL4 comes usually with 2MB ROM, and is a standar GM suynthesizer, with great YAMAHA quality ... bad thing is that it's DOS driver takes ~30kb (at least on my SW-20PC)

ahhh...so it's the same chips n stuff you had onj the card in your IBM PS/1?

The PSU died in this PC yesterday, bahhh....old crap from an Everest PC from 1999 😵

I'm currently playing around with genuine opl2/3 sound.
Yesterday I was coincidentally googling for these yamaha opl3-sax based isa cards, but I could not find any articles reviewing the series. Many people with driver problems on the discussiongroups though. Since there seemed not even a tiny fan base of these cards I imagined they were probably not that interesting.

Here is an image of such a card:

Anyone know what chips are left out of the board here?

Opl4 sounds like a strange hybrid between opl3 and a Gmidi wavetable synth. I had this card with a OP4+ Fm chip installed earlier. The OP4+FM played midi files whilst sounding a bit like an opl3 chip.

I recently obtained the opl3sax' successor, a yamaha ymf-724 PCI based card, with integrated opl-3 and semi-hardware XG/GMidi. It works in dos with the sb-link cable I made, and in windows I can also play opl2/3 music files with adplug, through hardware that is.

Amigaz: you could always try to get an overdrive cpu in it.

here is some info about the upgrade/overdrive processors.

This motherboard can take up to 233mhz Pentium I's and I have some spare 200/233mhz P 1 cpu's but not sure if I want to upgrade, maybe the advantages will be that I can play some newer 3D games?
And the 100mhz P1 is too fast for older games anyway, 🤣

It's like I'm stuck in the middle of the road 😵

Oh thats my site 😎
I also took a second look on this card because there is a wavetable sticker on it, but there is apparently no chip with that capabilities soldered.
After some research I found that there is that earlier mentioned OPL4 'add-on' chip for the OPL3-SAx.
(The one on the Mainboard picture above with 'General Midi' written on it)

So this is probably a value card where they left the wavetable option IC out.
