Is it possible? I have a gamepad with two analogue sticks and 8 buttons, but only the first four are recognized. I tried a few other games but they all seem limited to 4 buttons. I seem to have a hazy memory of it working back when I played Descent on Windows 98, but I'm not sure...

I'm using Dosbox 0.72 with the Boxer frontend on OS X.

Thanks!

Maybe you'll want to try one of the many Descent source ports, like D2X-XL. Most of them have enhanced graphics, and are very flexible with configuring your joypad/joystick or whatever other input method you prefer.

WD: Yeah, I took a look, but didn't see any way to specify the number of buttons on my joystick. I tried out a few games (Blood, Dark Forces, Jazz Jackrabbit), and their setup programs all seem limited to 4 buttons. So perhaps many old dos games just assumed a maximum of 4 buttons?

ADDiCT: Thanks! I'd been looking for an up-to-date version of D2X as the original version is kind of buggy on the latest OS X. I'm having problems with frame rates, but at least all of the buttons work on my gamepad.

buttonwrap=false
But of course you'd have to remap the 5+ buttons as dos games don't support more than 4 buttons.

ports suck, they ruin the faithfulness with crashes, broken physics and excessive 'eye candy' and don't even play the CD music properly.

Blah blah blah. Shut up and play Descent without enhanced graphics, better sound, and perfect control then. Being a purist is one thing, being plain stupid and forcing opinions down other peoples' throats is a different one.

solutions for DOSbox use in a DOSbox is great and relevant.
You can enjoy your fan-bastardized game all you want but i'll stick with the real thing.

I have to use the logitech game profiler to map buttons to keyboard, like joy2key.

People come here for many reasons. Some, like the original poster, come here because they want to play a certain games, not because they absolutely want to play it in DOSBox. DSOBox just happens to be one way to do. In this particular case, the poster seemed delighted to hear about the port, so thank you ADDiCT for that information.

ouch... way to make a thread go bad...
So far pointing to alternate solutions besides Dosbox have been very common, both by the users and dosbox developers as well.

MiniMax & Dominus: i agree to both of you, hence my reaction to leileilol's post. Sorry for taking the thread in a bad direction, wasn't my intention. Btw, i love to play Descent/Descent II with D2X-XL. I have hires textures and models installed, and my XBox controller configured so i don't have to use one single keyboard command for playing (besides for directing the bot) - Descent is _so_ much fun playing it that way (;
