Ok, I downloaded DOSBox to run some of my old favorite games; however, I get no sound at all.
I have tried many different solutions that are on this forum and none of them seem to work. Here is my configuration:

  • sbtype=sb16
    sbbase=220
    irq=7
    dma=1
    hdma=5
    mixer=true
    oplmode=auto
    oplrate=22050

Just to rule out the game volume being too low I changed the Mixer Master to 10000:10000, still no sound. There is a sound/music configuration, and it is set to Sound Blaster 16; IO=220, IRQ=7 and DMA=5. I also tried with DMA=1, to no avail. In addition I configured the other settings for DOSBox, GUS=False, this did not work either. I am now at a loss, and any help would be most appreciated.

The games are Decent and The Elder Scrolls: Arena.
There are no disks for them, so after installing to the C:\ I mount C to C:
What I have tried is just about everything I could think of, the sound in the games is turned up.
I have set Sound Blaster to SB16, SBPro1 and SBPro2 in the Configuration for DOSBox, and tried running with GUS=True and GUS=False. I also tried running with MPU-401, with IO=330, IRQ=2, and DMA=1. I used every option in the games configuration for sound, SB16, SBPro, GUS, etc...
I set Mixer Master to 100:100, 1000:1000, 10000:10000, and eve 100000:100000, to no avail. I also tried setting Mixer SB to 1000:1000 and still nothing.

There are no disks for them, so after installing to the C:\ I mount C to C:

Install it WITHIN dosbox and choose a mounting like "mount c d:\oldstuff"
for both the installation (additionally mount the install folder as d drive for
dosbox) as well as the gameplay.

Install it WITHIN dosbox

I tried just finished trying this with Arena, unfortunately when I do it tells me that it must be installed under Win32. I'm assuming its using an MSI file to install the game thats not compatible with DOS or DOSBox...even though its a DOS game it has probably been modified by Bethesda to install under Windows. 😢

To clarify: it's a self extracting executable. That means it's a ZIP or RAR archive (in this case, the latter, iirc) file with a built-in decoder program. Most programs such as WinZip/WinRar/PowerArchiver etc. know how to handle these and can unpack the executable just like a regular archive.

2nd clarification: When someone like Qbix with + 5900 posts writes that you can unrar/unzip it, you F...ING don't post a message like "It's an executable" without trying out QBix instructions first.

Be nice, Minimax. We may know Qbix to be a reliable source of information, but new posters won't. Post count isn't necessarily an indication of post quality 😜

I suppose I should have been a bit more specific than "It's an executable".
I extracted the install file, it gave me the executable install file that requires Win32 and wont install through DOSBox.
Sorry for any confusion. 😅

That executable install file (Arena106.exe, assuming you have the same version I do, which was the freeware release by Bethesday) is the one that you should unpack. You can also just run it in Windows, as it basically just does the same thing. By default, it creates a folder C:\ARENA. Move that into the folder you use to mount your DOSBox C drive.

For instance, if you use C:\OLDSTUFF for as your DOSBox C drive, move the ARENA folder into that, so it ends up being C:\OLDSTUFF\ARENA. Then, when you start DOSBox, "mount C C:\OLDSTUFF". Change to the newly mounted C drive by typing "C:", then go into the "ARENA" folder by typing "CD ARENA". From there, you can run "INSTALL.EXE" to configure the game (use configure only, not the "install game" option) and then run "ARENA.BAT" to start the game. On subsequent runs, you can skip the install.exe step.
