If I got a Roland CM-32L external module, would this provide exactly the same type and quality sound that a Roland LAPC-i ISA card would? In other words, from a sonic point of view, would there be no difference between these two items?

(For the CM-32L external module, I would connect it to a internal Roland SCC-1 ISA sound card.)

Thank you, best regards, Robert.

Have both but never heard any difference, haven't listened with my $500 headphones yet though 😁 I might hear a difference thru them

Yeah, the MX300 rocks...sad though that the wavetable header doesn't work in DOS when the card has excellent SBPro compatability in DOS..it could have made it a killer DOS card

The LAPC-I and CM-32 have the exact same capabilities, but the CM-32L may produce slightly less noisy sound because it is housed in an external enclosure protected by metal shielding. The LAPC-I's circuitry is exposed to the electrically noisy PC system components.

Agree....it's from the same era also as the Sound Blaster 1.x series and the original Adlib...if you use headphones you can actually hear exactly what's going on in your PC 😁

Rather like a doctor's stethoscope. 😉

yeah, hehe

On a Dell dual Xeon workstation I had I could hear when the CPU was working...it had crappy AC97 sound chipset

About your MT32/CM32 working with just a plain soundcards's midi output...I thought you needed an "intelligent" MPU 401 card?

Yes, I know what you mean. However, I think [if I'm wrong, someone please correct me] that if you are using an AWE64 running under Win9x (rather than in "pure DOS mode"), when you run a DOS game (inside a "DOS command box"), perhaps the MPU-401 emulation is "intelligent"? -Just an educated guess really.

I also tested out an SCC-1 with both the CM-32L and MT-32 units, and my brief tests appeared to be successful. (Many more tests to come of course, but for now I got the basics working, so I'm very pleased about that. Actually, I should have tested the SC-55 at the same time, but I got that working with the AWE64, so that should suffice for now.)

Just one problem I seem to be having at the moment - literally everytime I quit a DOS game (which has been running in a "Win9x DOS command box"), Windows 98 crashes badly and I have to reboot.

I doubt that. some games might need it, but quite a few don't.
speculation:
as midi out can't talk back, the mt32 might have no way of knowing wether the mpu is intelligent or not.

The MT-32 does not know or care what interface it is connected to. All it cares about is the data coming in on the midi in cable. As an example, you can use an MT-32 with Sierra's games on the Atari ST and it will sound exactly the same as it does on a PC.
