I took "pot luck", and bought an SC8500 ISA-based sound card from ebay. I don't know a thing about it - except it's got the word "dream" written on one of the chips, so that's kind of promising.

Here is the seller's description, which is in German -

Modell SC 8500 V1.6T: (Rarität!)
Line in, Mic in
Mit eingebautem Verstärker und Lautstärkeregler
Speaker-Ausgang
Surround-Ausgang!
ferner enthält die Karte ein Speicherriegel, keine Ahnung wofür
Joystick
IDE-Schnittstelle onboard
int. Wavetable-Anschluss
3x Audio CD-in
Midi/Gameport

The only thing I care about is, will it play any funky tunes in my old DOS games?

Thanks a lot for any info. 😀

Edit: I wonder if this beast [SC8500] is in any way like the terratec maestro 32/96? The reason I say this is because both of them have two dream chips and one crystal chip. (They've also both got 1 IDE connector and wavetable header.)

Speaker-Ausgang = speaker out

Surround-Ausgang = Surround out

gang means row since in Danish we have the word udgang which means "out" and row.

Verstärker = amplifier

Lautstärker = loudspeakers ? the rest must be be translated by a native German speaker.

With built-in amplifier and volume control (the wheel on the backside)
He doesn't know what the memory module is for

Looks like it has a crystal audio codec CS-xxxx from the photo. The memory probably belongs to some kind of user-"feedable" synthesizer.

He is completely wrong about the "Surround output" however... 🤣

This card is a Guillemot Maxi Sound 64. Its chipset is similar to the EWS64XL, but driver support is not as good.
Main difference is the missing front panel and that the waveblaster connector is on the board. Maybe this card does not suffer from the "SBPro mute bug" when using Midi2/daughterboard.

Terratec Maestro 32/96 has a SAM9233 and Crystal 4232, so it's not the same.

I have the SC-8000 version... no simm socket, but to my knowledge it has sb(pro) compatibillity and 1MB wavetable set. A nice card for when it was released IMHO

Ah! This explains a lot. 😀
So the "surround output" is some kind of additional output after all.

The layout of this card looks rather strange... It seems a full-sized wavetable board would collide with the memory module if you wanted to have both installed. 🤣

Lokking at the board I would guess that the header at the back of the card is for a front panel option.. it has too many pins for a DB. That looks like it is closer to the front (read: side with the back plane) with the output jacks and such.

Guillemot Maxi Sound 64 Home Studio Pro

I have this card running since it was released.
http://mail.lipsia.de/~enigma/neu/pics/maxisound.jpg

It does not have the SB Pro mute bug. I have full manuals and software for it (even latest unofficial beta). Do you need any information?
On technical level this card is nearly identical as an EWS64XL. Same Dream SAM6407, same Crystal 4236...

For a comparison check this: http://www.dosforum.de/soundcards/
The Dream songs were recorded from my card.

While EWS64XL has 2 MB RAM and can be upgraded to 64? MB the MaxiSound has already a 4 MB ROM onboard and can be upgraded with 16 MB (probably even more, but 16 MB can be jumpered). The Maxisound ROM is based on a Roland wavetable soundfont.

(I am not sure if I uploaded the latest beta here, I might have some newer version somewhere)

I don't know how good you are on configuring ISA PnP 😉
For NT4 I got some patched driver install to disable automatic PnP configuration, that enables the user to set any resources.

Yeah I have a 16 MB Module attached. It is sufficient even if you load the 11 MB Soundfont and an additional Drumkit. BTW: The card uses the same Soundfont format as the EWS64XL and Hoontech Soundtrack97. (TTB and 94B is the same, just different Header bytes, some converter exists)

For the Dream specs for the guillemot firmware on this card, rawly translated to english:
Specification of the DSP part:
128 Instruments, 97 Sound Variations, 200 Perkussionssounds in 16 Drum Sets in 4 MB ROM
64 voices Polyphonie
Multi Timbral with 16 channels
8 types of Reverb, 8 types of Chorus
4 channel Equalizer, Surround Sound
GM/GS compatible

Digital:
16Bit 44.1 kHz full duplex
up to 8 wave-files can be played simultaniously, while one wave track is recorded, with realtime effects on every single wave track.
dynamic noise filters

Effects:
4 Band Equalizer and Surround as aftereffects on Midi, Wave, CD, Line-In, Micro
Reverb, Chorus, Delay, Flanger are available per Wave or Midi track, additional Pitch possible on the Wave track
Echo and Reverb available in Realtime on the inputs

In addition to this all the features of the Crystal Codec are available.

As always guys, you are a mine of awesome retro knowledge. 😀

I consider myself to be fortunate that I found this card on ebay, purely by accident. It came bundled with a Creative SoundBlaster 16-bit ISA card, model number CT1750, the item I was looking for in fact.

In pure DOS the Crystal gives you SB Pro, WSS, OPL3 and so on. The Dream is visible as Midi Device at a port of your choice. It looks more or less like any other Wavetable. The specific settings like EQ, Surround a.s.o. can be set via SYSEX messages.
In my config I have f.e. a DB60XG as additional Wavetable board on the card and can switch Dream and DB60XG with ISA-PnP between 300/330 and 330/300 as I like. This has the advantage that I do not need to reconfigure any game or application, I just exchange the resources.

What stuff do you use to configure the card in pure DOS?

Any chance you can share just those utils? 😉

I am currently at work. I will up a working example config incl. the necessary tools when I am home.
Basically two programs are run, the crystal PnP Init cs4232c.exe (or newer cwdinit.exe) that reads the resources from cwdaudio.ini and loads the crystals firmware. After this 94dinit.exe is run to init the Dream DSP for DOS. No TSR.

Itching to try this card 😁
