Why is this? I have Daggerfall's detail set to max and it runs fine. With Arena's detail set to max the game is really slow. It's an older game and should run more smoothly than Daggerfall, shouldn't it? I have the cycles set to "max" in the config file because it wouldn't do this automatically with Arena like it does for Daggerfall. It's still slower, though.

Ah, there we go. Thank you! Why doesn't DOSBox set these settings automaticall with 'auto' like it does with Daggerfall? Just because the game is older?

Just wondering, but are there downsides to using dynamic? Because there aren't really many games that have issues with dynamic mode. I used to set to dynamic by default.

Arena isn't a protected mode game so it won't use the dynamic core by default.

Not anymore (that I noticed anyway).

But the dynamic core used to be less compatible and less stable and wouldn't work properly with Daggerfall back in 0.65 (or whatever version it was).

The dynamic cores have actually (way) better functionality thus providing
a better level of compatibility, still there may be timing/irq related problems
as side effects.
