Hi all, I'm so happy to have found this place.

Anyway, I've got xubuntu 8.10 on my laptop, with Wine and DOSBox. I've installed the english GK CD version through Wine (i.e. the dos installer), since the windows one refused to let me install with more than 265 colours. I'm a bit of a newb on linux, so I'm not sure how to change that.

SO yes, the game runs perfectly fine when started from DOSBox, sound working, but the conversation text simply whizzes by, disappearing in a fraction of a second. The poem in the beginning stays there, though.

I've tried reducing the text speed to minimum, tried reducing the CPU cycles as well. I get some visible improvement, but nowhere near playable levels. Again, if I go too low with my CPUfreq, I get an error (i.e. on x < 20%)

I'd really appreciate if anyone has any advice. I've checked some old posts here, and found out that this guy made some sort of a windows patcher for GK, a few years back. I'll try and use that, maybe it'll help to get it running through Wine, instead of DOSBox.

Thanks a million

Try changing core=auto to core=normal in dosbox.conf

If you want to test quickly just type core=normal in dosbox prompt.

DosFreak, tried that, didn't work. I must admit that I'm a bit insecure as to what I'm doing, being that on Linux you apparently have to tell DOSBox to create a cofig file that you can edit, as opposed to MSWin, where it's there from the start. So I did that and checked whether it actually registered it by putting in some autoexec stuff and it did... so putting core=normal should work as well, and it didn't give any results...

As for the mounting, I'm using gmount to load up the ISO. The game starts up and runs just fine, except for the text that just disappears as soon as it comes on to the screen. I'd really love someone to teach me how to do stuff... is there and IRC chan for DOSBox?

of course there is... I just have to find it. Any and all advice welcome still. Thanks for the effort, guys!

and so I have, and the good people there are helping me as we speak.

for all those concerned, it was an issue with sound and cd not being properly recognised, due to me using both Wine and DOSBox. It can be sorted out by using imgmount from dosbox itself, which I didn't knew existed.

cheers all.

There is no reason to use an ISO for GK1. It extremely easy to get it to play without need of a CD.
