This will be kind of long, so please bear with me. (Bear with me?)
So, initially I installed WoX without an emulator on XP SP2. The game installed perfectly but wouldn't run. Tried using an emulator (DOSBox 0.73) to run it, no success. Uninstalled and tried to install with the emulator and it wouldn't install (I couldn't even get past the "press any key" screen). Installed again through Windows and it installed successfully again. Ran it through 0.73 and this time I was able to get the game to run, but it would never run for more than a few minutes before freezing.
The game and emu are setup as such:
Installed to d:\games\WORLD
mount e e:\ -t cdrom
mount c d:\games
Then I go to the c:, change to the WORLD folder (so I'm at C:\WORLD) and run XEEN, and it runs.
All sound works well, I don't freeze at any one point, but more often than not it's when I'm leaving a store, the inn, the trainer, etc. But it's frozen when doing equipping, moving around, etc. There's no rhyme or reason.
I was using 0.73 then searched the forums and found people were running WoX fine on 0.65 so I downloaded that version... then when I tried to run the game it said:
"You have a MUSIC CD loaded!
Please insert a World of Xeen CD-ROM!"
So I removed the game from the HDD, installed it through DOSBox 0.65 (which it installed successfully this time) but when I try to run the game, it gives me the same error.
For giggles I made sure all the sound settings were correct. On the 0.73 version I created a CONFIG.INI through the COMMAND.COM on the Z: at the prompt and checked the settings there... *tears his hair out*
So, why the heck is the game freezing up on me on one version, and not running at all on another version? I admit that the one thing I haven't tried is fully disabling the sound because I really want the sound to work. =(
Any and all help is very greatly appreciated.
(PS, I'm a DOSBox newbie so anything too in depth I can't do without a guide. Oh, and I have no front ends installed because I've hated all the ones I've come across.)
