It works perfectly fine for me, without doing anything fancy.

Run INSTALL.EXE and check audio settings et al.

I've run the install and audio settings are correct. When the game starts to play the intro I can hear the audio without problems.

Yeah, like, I mean... Make sure you chose hardware that is emulated in DOSBox. Try unplugging your joystick and select Keyboard and Joystick instead of Joystick and Keyboard. If the music plays maybe the issue is with sound or your software might of been damaged.
I'd also try no music, no sound effects to see how it goes
