A friend of mine has a Dutch accounting program running under DOS. He's looking for a new PC, preferably with Windows 7 (or Vista). He wants to be sure the application works, so I'm testing it for him.

Everytime I start the application normally (via cmd) I get the error "This system does not support fullscreen mode". However, after ignoring this the application does start and works just fine, but in a very annoyingly small box.

Now I'm trying to get the application to work fullscreen under Windows 7. Having read severall forums, and asking collegues I decided to try DosBox to achieve this. Installation was fine, mounting was fine, after starting the application it does show me the startmenu, however after selecting a menuoption it gives me a message that another application needed for the program to work isn't loaded.

This first led me to believe, that it may be a security issue under Windows 7. I then tried installing it under XP to see if this was correct. However, even under XP after selection a menu-option I still get the errormessage.

I do not understand, why this happens. All files are situated in one folder, why can't it load/find the needed application?

lastig 😉

Anyway, what are your mount commands and does the application need more than one user working at it at the same time ?

Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 do not have DOS they have a DOS emulator.

Just because your program runs in the DOS emulator does not means that it's a proper DOS application. It's likely that this app is looking for some Windows program to execute.

The other possibility is that the app isn't installed or mounted correctly.

If this is Exact, that needs share.exe loaded. In fact, the same goes for many other such programs. Although I don't think share.exe will fulfill its actual intended function when run under DOSBox, it should load and allow the program to run. I used that to help a friend get Exact running under DOSBox. I can't actually give you share.exe or link to it here, but a simple Google query should get it for you.

I think FreeDOS may come with a share.com that worked for me once (sort of).

Yes, exactly, it is share.exe that won't load. However it's not Exact, it's "Kasboek" from the developer "Snelstart".

My mount command was "mount c: c:\", for the folder "skasboek" stands in the c:-root.

Have you tried Googling for share.exe, putting it into your program directory and then running it before starting the program?

Programs that need share.exe won't work directly in Dosbox. If you use a hdd image in dosbox and from inside of dosbox boot that one, it will work.
