Hello!

I've recently decided to relive my youth through master of orion, however I am having great troubles getting the midi music to work. 🙁

I have tried Master of Orion I & II, and music works on neither.
I've been playing the games for a few days, but without the music, the atmosphere is lost. I downloaded "FreeOrion" but it's not the same as the older versions. 🙁

I've tried both using dosbox, and vdmsound. I even tried following through the gravis ultrasound tutorial, to hopefully get something: nothing.

I have the dosbox settings as:

sbtype=sb16
sbbase=220
irq=7
dma=1

and the game settings match. I've tried with GUS turned off, i've tried
mpu401=intelligent & uart

I tried installing "timidity++" and configuring dosbox to it, and that didn't seem to help.

The only things that seem to work is:
-peculiarly, in MOO1, the music seems to work all through the intro, and at the menu, but then vanishes during gameplay. it does return when i go back to the main menu.
-in MOO1, I get a strange "double click" sound when it's loading.

I've tried MOO2-win95 version. I've tried patching both games to the newest versions.

I've tried downloading and playing midi files as a sanity check - and they played fine.

I've scoured the net, and nothing i've found on forums has helped.

when I type
mixer /listmidi, i get
0 microsoft gs sw synth
1 timidity

Somebody please help me take over the galaxy.
Regards,
Tom.

I fired up MOO 1 to refresh my memory, I get music at the Intro, Game Setup, Diplomacy Screen, and Planet Landings. There's
no background music at the strategy screens. Here is my mixer results. Where is your soundcard and MPU emulation?

0 "SoundMAX WDM MIDI" (my onboard sound)
1 "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth"
2 "MPU-401"

Think you'll need to provide more information about your system, especially your sound setup, relevant dobox settings and mountings.
Before others will take an interest in trouble shooting. Not very knowledgeable about dosbox or sound problems, just throwing out
what info I can. As someone will mention I'm sure. Good place to start.

thanks for you help tempus2.

i thought that might be the cast, but if you look on youtube (for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctYCh9vREFo) people seem to have music running on the strategy screens.

i'm not sure what the deal is with my onboard audio stuff, it's all built in to this newfangled motherboard. according to system i have:
-realtek high definition audio
-legacy audio drivers
-NVIDIA high definition audio

i'm not sure what "MPU emulation" is, is this something i should look into, can it be done with software?

as another check, i ran UFO- enemy unknown yesterday and all of the music/midi stuff ran fine... 🙁

I watched the youtube clip and if you listen closely near the middle, you'll here him say he's going to play some music because MOO is
lacking it. He then starts up some external music, which is what you're hearing. So if you're getting snippets of music when you make
a tech discovery, or talking to an alien race, then that's all MOO 1 offers. I had the 4 or 5 floppy disk version, and what I'm playing
now is a zip of that I believe. Later releases it looks like they put out on CD, but I think it was just for easier delivery and didn't
add a music track or anything else. Someone will correct me if I am wrong?

Today, two years after the original post, I finally managed to get the sound working.
The problem was: I had the in-game volume set to zero!
So if anyone is having trouble with sound, remember that a fresh install will have the sound levels on zero, and these levels can only be adjusted from an in-game menu once you've started a level!!
