Finally got many games to work with Shino7d Dos [not an] Emulator

Hello,
I recently tried to play some Dos games like the Horde and 7th Guest on my computer. I have WinXp.

I tried many Dos emulators. I found them too complicated or not compatible enough. I am a Dos newbie.
I finally found one that's easier to configure: Shinod7.
I was looking for a way to play Tex:Murphy Pandora Directive on WinXP. I search on Google and found this French page:

All the main files are on 3.5 disk. When you reboot your computer with the disk, the program is installed easily.
It works with plugins (sound, keyboard).
I tried 7th Guest and it installed like a charm.
I had some problems with sound but I downloaded a plugin for my AC97 chipset and it worked.

I removed the disk and rebooted to WinXp without a problem.

The main webpage is in French but there's an English forum.

Give it a try. It is updated constantly.

I found it a good alternative to Dosbox and VDMsound.

Tonight I will try to install Phantasmagoria 2 and Star Control 2.

Is that actually an emulator or is it just that DOS bootdisk with utilities that I've heard people talk about?

From what I have seen, it is more a bootdisk but it is easier to configurate.

You have to exit WinXp and reboot with the disk in the A: drive.

With emulators, you are still in WinXP.

I have so much problems configuring the sound and video before that I almost threw my computer by the window.

The most important thing is I got most of my Dos games running smoothly. I have yet to try Phantasmagoria 2.

It is not perfect. This is a beta version I think.

#1 - this is not an emulator. it is a bootdisk.
#2 - if you have formatted your drive with NTFS you're still screwed.

How do you get sound output under ms-dos with this thing? I don't get it. Most games work for me under ms-dos but with my CMI8738 and its bad SB emulator I got no sound.

AC97 sound (built-in-mainboard) usually does not have DOS emulation. I think the SBLive! was the last Creative card to have DOS drivers/emulators.

I tested it on two different machines and it failed on both of them. What a POS.

Another weakness of boot-disks is that you end up having to tweak them for individual games and individual sound cards (and keep track of those individual boot disks).

In some cases it's not possible to fit all the drivers and needed files onto a single floppy.
