Hi all. Just wanted to say a few words about the postings here:

I'm not affiliated to the moderators in any way, but personally, I feel the sale ad in a tech help forum is not, let me put it bluntly, nice.

eBay has been my hang out place lately, because that is THE best place to buy and sell classic hardware, especially the PC retro hardwares. If one is looking for some old hardware, the best place to do the trading is ebay or other such business oriented sites.

Yes, I have requested a few items here, since some are hard to come by, and some are next to impossible to find, but most of our fellow vogoners have contacted me by PM regarding the things I want. One of our members even refused to accept the shipping cost, till he made sure that I have received the item, and actually made me confirm that it works before he even sent me his paypal address!!
(I can't thank him enough for his care!).

I know that beneath the Milliways, the description says : "Announcements, advice, random banter, unrelated discussion, et cetera.", but I think posting an ad for personal business is not, imho, appropriate.

It's different if you're giving away for free (or for some sort of token), something that you think might be helpful to the members here, and of course you can simply state the shipping charges, which the other member will gladly pay.

I believe if someone wants something, that someone will definitely post his request here or in the signature. Then, people having the said item can contact via pm, for selling or otherwise.

I personally have been warned by fellow moderators for posting some abandonware-related issues/links that I have posted (which was subsequently deleted), but I still do respect what they like us to do here.

After all, it's because of these moderators, that we from different nations, of different races, unite here for one reason - Classic Gaming.

I write this in the interest of having a friendly and helpful atmosphere. If anyone is offended by this post, please do forgive me, since it's just my opinion, and is not intended directly at anyone.

Kind Regards,
Malik.

Can the mods please remove any sale posts i've created as people are just starting to whine! I will just leave them with eBay, Amibay and my number 1 forum EAB... where people appreciate the things i have to offer 😉

I agree with cdoublejj as it would be nice to have a trading area... i sell things but i'm also always on the lookout for new/old computer related bits too 😀

I think it's good to keep vogons uncluttered and focused on what makes it useful.

So go easy on sales pitches; this discussion only started because someone seemed to be turning the forum into their personal small ads. At least keep your old crap in one thread, and make sure it's old crap. Here's a good example of what to do: I'm getting rid of old hardware.

On abandonware: there are specialist sites for that, so go there if you want to link and download abandonware, this is not the place.

I removed posts that made it look like a market place.

Thanks for that, maybe it will stop people whining about posts they don't even have to bloody read!! I'm sure there's better things to do for the moaners than start "policing" forums. It's not like i'm forcing anyone to read my posts 😒.

Ok maybe if i had decided to sell everytthing at the same time then i suppose i could have put them in one post... but they were put up for sale at different times and i'm not sure if the thread title can be changed?

Anyway rant over 😉

why not not just put in a trading area? almost all computer related forums have one.

A great idea and should not bother anyone as they can just skip that section 😀

I guess thats us told in a "not so nice blunt way" from just another regular member and not a mod 😒

The people had nothing to do with my decision. I brought the matter up earlier with the moderators that I didn't like the way Milliways was turning into a private selling ground. This was just a moment to act on it.

A trading area will not be created, at least not at this time.

The abandonware stance is correct. I assumed most regulars would be familiar with it. It is no secret that it is not tolerated for our own protection.

Hope you don't mind a noob making a couple of suggestions 😅

I'm new to this site but have already taken some things from 5u3 (the items were free and I just paid postage), however I only found his thread by chance as I was looking to see what most of the forums were about. I'm always on the lookout for hardware and software and, even though I haven't been a member for long, I would rather buy from an established member of this community than from eBay. I'm definitely for having a trading area, it could be out of the way at the bottom of the list so it's not cluttering the rest of the forums.

Anyway, on another note (although slightly related), how about moving the DOSBox forum links on the main homepage up nearer the top of the page? So many DOSBox threads get posted in the DOS forums, I'm guessing because most people don't scroll all the way down the page and see the actual DOSBox category. That would probably save a lot of work for the mods and would stop me reading loads of DOSBox threads that I'm not interested in!

I've seen at least two instances here when the thread was closed for 'abandonware support' reasons but the links and context in the OP were in the form of an official shareware demo that was downloaded.

Take abandonware discussion elsewhere, tired of discussing it. Search the forums if you want a good read on VOGONS stance. If you have a problem with a thread being closed then report it, don't bitch about it years later.

Any further abandonware discussion in this thread and the posts will be deleted.

/EDIT Thread renamed

Thread closed.

Qbix already mentioned that the forum will not be created at this time but possibly in the future so no point in continuing this thread anyway.
