Did the old battery leak already? If it did it could have damaged the board.

Actually leaking batteries take some time to do actual damage (6-24 months once they started) ... it's quite tedious to clean up those messes, but not impossible

I remember that Amstrad PC1512 (PC6400 in USA) needed an special program to write values in the NVRAM.

Check the original MS-DOS floppies that came with the Schneider.

I wonder, if you buy a battery like that new, if it isn't charged, wouldn't it require some time to do so? In my opinion it would be better to replace that battery with a battery holder and use either 2-3 AAs or a 2032 battery. And of course if you do that, you have to fit also a diode, so as to prevent it from charging the non-rechargeable batteries. If you fit a battery holder, you can take it also out of the case, and replace the batteries whenever you need more easily.

No problem. AAs are these batteries :

and 2032 is this :

A battery holder, is a small thing that contains the batteries, and lets you connect cables on it.

or

If you do that, the batteries you are going to fit, should last for a year or more. The only problem you have then, is that you don't want the pc to recharge them. So you use a diode. A diode looks like this :

This small thing, just lets the electric current flow only on one way. So if you attach a diode on the positive pole of the battery holder, it will let the batteries power the RTC, but it will prevent the pc to recharge them. You must be careful with the diode, because it works one way. If you fit it backwards, it's going to charge the batteries, and they won't power the RTC.
