OS: Vista 32 bit.

Um, hello fellow boxer's, I wasn't sure if there was a topic on this since every time I try and look, there are innumerable pages and results to sift through so, I decided to make one of my own. Please forgive me Dosbox Admins. 🙁

Problem
Anyways, I downloaded Dosbox 0.74 and played Warcraft 1. It was very fun to play it once more, as an adult and then, after the second time of playing it, it wouldn't go fullscreen and when I mangled with the config file, to change the resolution, it crashed. . . Over, and over again.

- Please forgive me but, I'm going to skip all the rest of the annoying stuff I tried.

Solution
So, after doing some custom fiddling and NOT following what these forums or other Google results came up with, I fixed the problem and decided to sign up with Dosbox forums, to report what I did to fix the problem.

1.) Open the Dosbox "Config" file from the Dosbox folder in the "Start" menu or, go to its directory, either is fine. (notepad.)

2.) Replace these values as follows, under "sdl".

fullscreen=false
fulldouble=false
fullresolution=1280x800
windowresolution=1100x900
output=ddraw

autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
priority=higher,normal
mapperfile=mapper-0.74.map
usescancodes=true

3.) "Save as", erase the "f" from "conf", so the original name pops up and you don't save it as a txt file. Click the name, save, overwrite.
(This is meant as a solution for people playing games in Vista and always getting a crash report or some other garbage they don't want. please use these settings and change "windowresolution", to what ever you desire.)

Conclusion

Some newer windows might not tap into Ddraw to play games or, adjust the screen size. Use these adjustments so that the computer thinks, "oh, you wanna change the dosbox window size, not the game resolution."

I really hope this helped.

The general advice around these parts is "use output that's not surface". Surface and modern hardware don't get along since "the way it's meant to be played" don't involve packed pixels anymore, apparently.

You can try fullresolution=0x0 for less switchery - it'll size to your desktop res instead.
