😕

I vaguely remember having gotten Wizardry 7 to run on Dosbox before. Anyway, I have the games files (not the .iso image available on abandonia) in an archive. I extract the archive into a folder. Then I set up the game in Dosbox, using the 'normal DOS game' template, specifying the main programme file, and mounting the game's folder as a virtual drive. Starting the game through Dosbox, I get the error message 'reboot requested. exiting now."

I have varied the dosbox settings considerably, without any result. I still get this error message. Any suggestions on how to get the game to work?

Solved it, in case anybody is interested. There is a pre-installed version here:

[ABANDONWARE LINK REMOVED BY MODERATOR]

This works perfectly fine in Dosbox; I just had to adjust the sound settings.

Please don't link warez sites. The mods get mad.

I thought abandonware and warez were different. There are hundreds of abandonware open sites around, I thought they were at least close to legal.

Nope. Expect that link to get removed and this thread to get locked.

Yes, we don't support abandonware here. Just stick to original packaged software. Besides legal issues, we don't know how modified an abandonware game is. It could fail just for that...

They're the same thing. Some people just call it abandonware in an attempt to justify that they are violating copyright law. Copyrights last 75+ years unless at some point the copyright holder gives it up and places it in the public domain. Just because a program hasn't been distributed for a long time or the copyright holder can't be located or determined doesn't mean it's free for all. The abandonware sites get away with what they are doing because it is rare that someone ever actually complains about a 30 year old game being downloaded and the worst that happens is they get a DMCA takedown notice ordering them to remove a particular game which they comply with, but it is still illegal as long as there is a copyright in force. Things only get messy for them if they refuse to remove something after receiving the takedown notice. They rely on the fact that not every copyright holder will be policing the whole internet looking for violations so they get away with it for the most part because without a complaint to act on, authorities can't do very much.

It's also assumed around here that abandonware will have any copy protection that it originally came with removed which may affect how it runs either in an emulated environment or on an actual system so fixes that work with a legit copy may not work once the program has been extracted from it's original media.
