Hello

Is there anyway I can pause dosbox, or freeze the screen momenarily by pressing a certain key? My reason for asking is that Im trying to play a game but the text messages flick on and off the screen too quickly to read. I have tried to slow down dosbox, but this makes the game unplayable alltogether.

So I was wondering if it was possible to somehow freeze or pause dosbox each time a message comes up.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

You can use debug version of CVS, break into debugger by pressing - on numeric keyboard and then continue by pressing F5 in debugger.

As far as I know there is not any normal Pause key implemented. 🙁

If it is not an adventure game and there is not much text you can always make screenshots by pressing Ctrl-F5 and switch Alt-Tab between dosbox and your picture viewer running in backbround.

there are 2 ways pause could be implemented:
1 implement the pause key so games can pause themself.

2. implement a pause key that halts dosbox itself. Like the debugger mode.

those are really different !

The second way will pause every game/application that exists.
the first way is the way dos paused games (actually the bios but okay)
and can be disabled by the game.

The first way would be nice just because it's an actual feature of the real thing.
...but I like more the second one because no program can skip it 😁

If you're going to implement one do the total dosbox pause, please.

p.s: Nice avatar Qbix 😀

Just wanted to say that if you set in DosBoxCVS for example:
cycles=2500
cycleup=2499
cycledown=2500
so pressing ctrl-F11 will pause and ctrl-F12 will continue 😀
(well.. not exactly but should be enough)

The problem with having a pause key in PC games, is that no matter which key you assign as the "pause dosbox key", there will be a kazzillion and one games which use that exact key for something. The num lock key is about the only one I can think of, that no game I`ve ever played has used, but I`ll bet theres a few that do.

Well, you could of course try something with the Windows-key or that other special Win-only key. Or, even better, make the key configurable so you can set whatever Pause-key you want.
