There seems to be a lack of good virtual drive utilities for Win9x, so I thought I'd point this one out.

I wonder what happens when you try to use it in Windows 95?

Daemon Tools 3.47 user on my 9x builds. Everything works, as long as you have the source of the ISO mounted (eg. don't remove a USB stick that has a mounted iso inside).

I believe Jorpho is already aware about Daemontools working, he just wants to know if WinArchiver is also working.
I had the impression that DT 3.47 was somehow obscure or undesirable. Perhaps I was mistaken.

i remember having bluescreen issues at win9x startup with DT 3.47,
not sure why its happend but i remember it was solved when I roll back (safe mode, uninstal DT) to DT 3.46.
I unable replicate the same issues on other win9x box.

This happens when you don't dimount an image from a removable device and when Daemon Tools loads at startup, tries to mount it again and doesn't find it.
Daemon tools is super stable if your behavior against it is gentle. And remember to do a reboot before changing the... millionth ISO in the same Windows session. 😉

Is there any win9x compatible virtual drive software than can read all "red book" audio games ?
IIRC I was able to get audio from Screamer Rally with DT once but not from Shadow Warrior, Quake 2 and the others... 😒
I always use VCD, it work flawlessly but games that use audio tracks won't play music at all. 😵
Last time I checked there was a trick with editing the cue file or that kind of thing to redirect audio data,
but heck I prefer to put the CD in the drive to play than that 🤣

There's no reason any particular software should work for one redbook audio game but not another, at least in Win9x. (Win2k/XP and later is a different matter.)

If you have one .BIN file and one .CUE file, then there is no need for such editing.
Daemon Tools 3.47 will not work with WinME. It always hangs at startup.
I've found that 3.44 works just fine though 😀. It's always good to have alternatives, thanks Jorpho!
I use this one as well:

Just tried to mount the cue files of those games and apparently I can't (years ago I tried imaginig with ImgBurn/DT or Clone CD and the result was the same => no audio and the culprit seems to be something wrong in the cue file), if I'm not wrong it should work and only play audio tracks ? 😵
The only plausible way SR was running fine at that time would be that it was not one of my IMG 🤣
Maybe the cue file contains paths, just edit them out
Yes, that is one instance in which it is necessary to edit the .cue file. (And of course if the .cue file originally came with a bunch of MP3s or OGGs, there's no way to get music without them.)
Another try... VCD with Windows 7 don't want to read my cue files, in Win95 it does read it but not audio/tracks listing. 😒
DT with Windows 7 and Win95 can read my cue files and seem to show and play audio/tracks fine with media player, but no ingame music 😵
Virtual drive is set to D: Windows audio CD default drive also set to D: Analog audio activated via DT and AWE64 Direct Sound driver selected 😐
Only ingame difference between VCD and DT under Win95 is that it run faster with VCD (instantly remember why I was using VCD all this time) 🤣
Games tried so far : Screamer Rally, Shadow Warrior and Quake 2.
Quake 2 cue :
FILE "Quake_2.img" BINARYTRACK 1 MODE1/2352INDEX 1 00:00:00TRACK 2 AUDIOINDEX 1 40:35:10TRACK 3 AUDIOINDEX 1 44:05:72TRACK 4 AUDIOINDEX 1 46:25:49TRACK 5 AUDIOINDEX 1 48:59:58TRACK 6 AUDIOINDEX 1 51:53:19TRACK 7 AUDIOINDEX 1 54:30:11TRACK 8 AUDIOINDEX 1 58:07:23TRACK 9 AUDIOINDEX 1 61:13:39TRACK 10 AUDIOINDEX 1 63:51:32TRACK 11 AUDIOINDEX 1 65:53:355
Screamer Rally cue :
FILE "SRALLY.BIN" BINARYTRACK 01 MODE1/2352INDEX 01 00:00:00TRACK 02 AUDIOPREGAP 00:02:00INDEX 00 18:14:46INDEX 01 18:14:47TRACK 03 AUDIOINDEX 00 22:38:42INDEX 01 22:40:41TRACK 04 AUDIOINDEX 00 26:41:50INDEX 01 26:43:49TRACK 05 AUDIOINDEX 00 30:56:58INDEX 01 30:58:57TRACK 06 AUDIOINDEX 00 35:09:27INDEX 01 35:11:26TRACK 07 AUDIOINDEX 00 38:06:34INDEX 01 38:08:33TRACK 08 AUDIOINDEX 00 42:26:71INDEX 01 42:28:70TRACK 09 AUDIOINDEX 00 47:05:48INDEX 01 47:07:47
It could be a Direct Sound issue for Screamer Rally and Shadow Warrior (because they are DOS games after all) , but Quake 2 should be ok 😕
I'm pretty sure that I was able to play SR ingame music with DT under Win95 some years ago, but maybe with a different sound card (probably a SB PCI)...
Anyway, even if I get things work with DT I would prefer to use the cd to play (it's damn too CPU intensive for a PMMX) 😵
