I have an old Gateway 2000 board with the 430VX chipset. It uses PC66 SDRAM and came with 24MB RAM installed. One 16MB stick (2x64) and one 8MB stick (1x64). It only recognizes 32MB of a 128MB PC100 stick (16Mx64), and 16MB of a 64MB PC66 stick (8Mx72).

I've never had this problem with RAM before, and I've been trying to find some information on the numbers but haven't found anything useful yet. The sticks are fully recognized in PII/PIII machines. Any information would be appreciated.

Premio 212B motherboard (MSI MS-6112)
Intel PentiumII 333MHz Slot 1 66MHz bus
384MB ECC 66MHz
SIIG ATA133 controller --> Seagate Barracuda 80GB
SIIG Gigabit Ethernet (RTL8169) / USB 2.0 / IEEE1394 controller
ESS 1869 soundcard on board wavetable synth

This is because the VX chipset will only recognize the lowest density chips fully, so max 32MB for sticks with 16 chips (8 per side).

Exactly, 430VX only supports 16MBit chips, all 32MB modules with 16 chips should work.
Maximum memory supported is 128MB, but more important the cacheable area is 64MB so I'd put in two 32MB modules. I suppose using larger modules which are recognized as 32MB wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for the replies. I'm now running 2 32MB sticks with 16 chips each. I had to run a 512MB stick of PC133 just to see 64MB! While this worked, I feel better not wasting all of that memory.
