VOGONS

Being of both VOGONS and MAME worlds, when I come across crossovers (typically PC hardware in arcade cabinets), I tend to find it kinda interesting. For an example, see my research into "POD Arcade": POD Arcade with prototype dual Voodoo Graphics card

Today, I learned that there is an advertising flyer showing off Ultim@te Race:

The attachment ultimate_race_arcade_1.jpg is no longer available
The attachment ultimate_race_arcade_2.jpg is no longer available
The attachment ultimate_race_arcade_3.jpg is no longer available

Mfg. listed as "Midwest Amusement Corp."

Perhaps it was merely a PC set to boot Ultim@te Race with a coin-operated timer. Perhaps the arcade cabinet is merely an artist's mockup in Photoshop and they never made or sold this. Perhaps we'll never know. 😀

Here we have a little more info on the hardware, it was of the OpenArcade (PC Arcade) format:
http://www.pure.com/de/press/january-1999/article_21987
http://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Arcade … ame-2938256.php

"Ultim@te Race utilises a customised PC system from Compaq, the latest Pentium II processor technology from Intel and VideoLogic's and NEC Electronic Inc.'s PowerVR Series2 graphics acceleration as well as the VideoLogic R-Cade Master and R-Cade Force controller boards which handle essential game features such as force-feedback for the steering mechanism, button, lamp and coin-operation."
...
"One Japanese company, Midwest Amusement Corp., in February 1999 announced plans to market a new line of arcade games that use Compaq Pentium II computers. The machines, which can play multiple games and be updated with new titles from a remote spot through a server located in the arcade, are due to roll out in the United States later this year."

Cool! Any excuse to emulate a SGL of some sort is great. midas.c here we come 😜

Especially Series 2 which is relatively obscurer (especially the 98 incarnation of it)

Well, first someone like The Dumping Union needs to find the game 😜

But emulation of PowerVR Series2 PC-hardware will probably come someday anyways with or without this obscure (unreleased?) arcade port.

Much like the POD Arcade page, we'll put info here as we find it.

It seems, though the POD Arcade 90's announcement stuck in my head, the Ultim@te Race one did not. 🤣

That is interesting, somewhat similar in concept to SEGA arcade boards based on Dreamcast, PowerVR and all!

Yes, PC-compatible hardware (to the point where it boots DOS or Windows or Linux) in an arcade cabinet has a pretty lengthy history, though I'd argue that it didn't kick into high gear until the mid-late 90's. 😉

Speaking of PC-compatible hardware in arcades.

Half-Life 2 Survivor is one of those games.

Though seeing this makes me wonder, are there any known arcade systems running MS-DOS or Windows CE?

Indeed:

Although that's actually a type of hardware called Taito Type X+, a derivative of Taito's Type X. In this case, the hardware system actually has a name. 😀

There's many DOS ones in MAME already. The first one that comes to mind is:

but there's a ton more.

Others run Windows 98, Windows 2000...

Windows CE, dunno for certain...

Now I've seen it all. "Couldn't get enough of those half-assed arcade-to-PC ports with shit CGA graphics? Rejoice - we bring you shit CGA graphics directly to the arcade!" 😁

Well what with Windows CE having a port to the Dreamcast, I'd always wonder if that resulted in any strange arcade combinations.

Maybe they need a little 8088 MPH magic to improve the graphical quality. I mean weren't there alot of CGA games that used composite monitor hacks?

MAMEDev has seen some serious shit. 😉

Honestly, until the big arcade companies got into using PC hardware for commodity's sake, PC-based arcade hardware was best known for obscure European/Korean utter crap.
