Is there such a thing? If you google "parallel to ethernet", all you get are various print servers. Maybe it's possible to use one as an Ethernet card? I'm pretty sure a packet driver would be needed to make it work. Anyone ever tried?

Cheers

Yes there is, most famous I know is the Xircom PE3-10BT , it is well documented and has drivers available.
Look here: http://www.brutman.com/Dos_Networking/xircom_pe3.html

But keep in mind, these devices are meant for slow machines like a XT-class one, for anything more than that I'd just use an ISA nic personally.

I bought an IBM PS/2 L40SX laptop which doesn't have PCMCIA or ISA slots so basically not many options left. Still haven't got the laptop here but hopefully next month.

Does anyone have schematics or a detailed photograph of inside of that adapter, so it (possibly) could be reverse-engineered? Maybe the integrated circuits used to produce it are still available.

I've got a Parallel Ethernet card (both BNC and RJ), however, I never found any drivers for it. I can make some pictures if you're interested.

Now that you mention it, I just remembered something that I picked up at my first workplace. It's a beige dongle labeled Genius LAN and it plugs into... yep.. you've guessed it.. the LPT port!

The only mention of Genius LAN I could find in google images: http://ftp.pigwa.net/stuff/collections/atari_ … t/04/united.htm

I had more luck searching for Genius E3000II which I picked up on the previous link. There is no indication of model number on the product itself.

Well, that would be nice. Even if it would be hard to re-engineer, maybe we could help finding the drivers.
I just have never seen the insides of any ethernet - parallel adapter, maybe some using only basic logic chips exist (ex. covox was a sound card using only resistors, so there's even no logic at all).

I took some pictures of the adapter that I have.

EDIT:
Just finished testing the adapter with mTCP and it works like a charm 😀
