I just received my first MT32 and SC7 in the mail today, and I want to try to get it hooked up to the Midiman MM401 I picked up last month. Coincidentally, I managed to get a pile of newer stuff recently which included an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI card. It came with a DE9 to midi I\O cable but it also has audio jacks in the adapter as well. Is this likely to work with the midiman?

As rare as these cards are, I don't want to mess it up by using a non standard cable.

Also, I've been trying to get my SC7 working via the serial port for a little while now and all I've managed to do is install a driver I found online that makes Win98SE crash when loading. I had to go to safemode and delete the driver files to fix it. I couldn't find any SC7 serial port drivers in the Vogons archives.

Ideally, I'd like to eventually have both of them connected through each other somehow (most likely not using the serial connection), then I can use whichever one sounds better for a particular game. I don't know how to do this though. Strangely, the MT32's manual doesn't really explain what midi IN, OUT and THRU are for specifically, or how best to use multiple modules together.

EDIT: I just found this thread:
MIDIMAN MM-401 breakout cable

And according to the helpful pictures posted, the IN and OUT pins are the same on my M-Audio cable, except that the top center pin doesn't go to anything at all. It doesn't go to the casing or any of the pins on the DE9 connector. Not sure if this would be a problem or not. It doesn't seem like it would be if its intended to be used this way on a newer card, but I don't know...

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Okay, I was impatient. I set the midiman to use port 300 (since my CT2940 won't let go of 330), plugged it into an ISA slot, hooked up the DE9 cable with a standard DIN cable to my SC7, and it works! ... as long as I have my speakers connected to the "phones" output on the front of the SC7. For some reason I don't get any sound from the rear outputs on my SC7. What might be causing this? I'm using the exact same cables for both, I'm just adding a stereo RCA to 3.5mm adapter to plug it into the front headphone output.

I've tried it on two different stereo receivers and haven't gotten anything from the rear outputs.
