There is no way to avoid their being scrapped?

That is true but one doesn't just get to pick what they want but rather by the pallet or lot unfortunately. What doesn't sell goes to the scrap 😵

not always going to auction. Our stuff at the university I work at, it always goes to the scapper no auction just to a recycler after the hard drives are shredded in house.

Wow, now I am glad that I live in CZ, because you have to scrap everything owned by state. But usually you have two ways to go around. First is just simply hide it from eyes and behave like it never existed. Second is, when they find out about that, just take another one SIMILIAR to the first one (no big deal, I did it with Commodore C64 - swaped for old non-functional AT keyboard with missing keys) and slap on that the same registration number as the thing you want to get has. Usually, there is NOBODY who knows what the hell is Tandy or Commodore, so they just scrap that.

All my current DOS/Windows gaming systems were rescued from our lab when they were scrapping them (a 5150, 486, Pentium I, and Pentium III plus two NIB 17" monitors). I helps when you're on the disposal team. 😀 It breaks my heart to look at all the stuff we did scrap, but I can only take so much and I can't let others take anything due to security concerns (technically I wasn't even supposed to take anything).

I don't understand the point of having to eliminate everything other than the hard drives and storage media though. 🙁

I suspect it's done to ruin second-hand market. Many old PC are well enough to use, but corporations need profit from selling new stuff. So to lobby one more idiotic law for their interests is logical for them. Another place for absurdity is amortization of old PCs by law, not by actual outdating or deterioration.
There are reasonable regions for such laws like machine's components, so no one could sell them as "new" what may lead to untimely breakage. But for computers parts it's just idiocy.

That's a great idea, I'm in. I have no expectations of owning any of that stuff but would hate to see it destroyed.

Those baby AT towers are the exact case I've been looking for these past few weeks -- with very little luck -- and these are probably going to end up as scrap... 😳

Should we work up a document that we simply print out and sign OR should we write our own, individual letters? I suppose we need nforce4max to agree to be in on the idea, first of all.

I'm all for it, where do I sign? Need to save this stuff omg!!

Back when I was at university, they would leave all the scrap computer equipment in the hallway and put a "free" sign on it. The junk would create an eye sore for a few weeks, then disappear.
